Empowering schools in marginalized communities through coaching and leadership training. Dignitas is a leading education development organization.

We use an innovative training and coaching approach to empower schools and educators in marginalized communities to transform studentsโ€™ opportunities. Currently based in Nairobi, Kenya, Dignitas operates in five informal settlements across the city. We partner with schools for a three year period, providing an intensive 3-week Leadership Training Institute, ongoing coaching, tailored personal development workshops and infrastructure support.

Improving learning outcomes requires a system that is aligned, responsive, and working together.

Last week, this came to life as we joined partners across the ๐€๐‹๐ข๐•๐„ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ ๐ซ๐š๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ž for a 3-day ๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—Ÿ๐—œ ๐—”๐—ณ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ convening, bringing together government and education actors advancing life skills and values-based education. The ALiVE Programme focuses on ensuring children gain the skills and values they need to thrive in school, work, and life.

As an implementing partner, our work in Isiolo focuses on supporting teachers through training and coaching to integrate these skills into everyday teaching and learning.

But strong classroom practice is just the starting point. For this work to last and reach more learners, it needs to be supported across the system through:

โœ”๏ธ Alignment across education actors
โœ”๏ธ Use of evidence to inform decisions
โœ”๏ธ Coordination between policy, schools, and communities
โœ”๏ธ Sustained system-level support

This is what it takes to move from strong teaching in individual classrooms to lasting impact for all learners.

Coaching delivers results when it is embedded in how schools operate.

Our Partnerships Director, Ng'ang'a Kibandi shared how weโ€™ve been working with partners to design and test a structured approach that connects training, observation, and reflection as part of everyday school practice, recently presented at the KEMI International Conference 2026.

Early results are already showing shifts in school leadership, teaching practice, and classroom environments.

What are you seeing in your schools when it comes to gender-responsive teaching?

We spoke to a Curriculum Support Officer about the (LL4GE) program, and this is what she had to say.

She shares how schools are becoming more intentional in their teaching practices, and how ongoing support is helping to strengthen and sustain these changes over time.

What changes do we see when classrooms become more gender-responsive?
In this video, learners share how both boys and girls now participate equally, while teachers reflect on what has changed: learners are more confident, more expressive, and more willing to take part in class and school activities.

These are some of the changes we are seeing through the
(LL4GE) program, implemented by Dignitas Project in partnership with the British Council

What does gender equality look like in practice inside a classroom?

In Machakos County, teachers are putting gender-inclusive learning into action: ensuring equal participation, fair access to materials, and inclusive teaching practices for both boys and girls.

Through our (LL4GE) program, school leaders and teachers are being supported to embed gender-responsive approaches that improve learning for all.

This is one of many stories. The full documentary, capturing voices from across schools and communities, will be shared soon.

How do you know, during a lesson, that both your boys and girls are actually learning?

In Homa Bay County, we conducted a training with school leaders under the Leading Learning for Gender Equality (LL4GE) program.

We focused on Assessment for Learningโ€”real-time checks teachers use during lessons to understand learner progress and adjust teaching immediately so that both boys and girls are supported to improve outcomes.

Weโ€™re excited to be part of the CIES 2026, where our team will be sharing insights on strengthening school leadership and improving learning for all children.

Weโ€™ll be talking about how school leaders and teachers can play a stronger role in advancing foundational learning, and how we can overcome everyday challenges that affect the teaching of life skills, values, and gender equality in our schools.

These are real conversations about whatโ€™s happening in classrooms and how we can turn policies into practical actions that support both teachers and learners.

This International Womenโ€™s Day, we celebrate the women on our team who give their knowledge, leadership, and support to make sure we all gain stronger teams, stronger schools, and better opportunities for every child.

When women lead, support, and learn from one another, the impact goes far beyond individuals, strengthens the whole system.

Happy International Women's Day!

Kenyaโ€™s shift to ๐‚๐จ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ž๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ฒ-๐๐š๐ฌ๐ž๐ ๐„๐๐ฎ๐œ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง (๐‚๐๐„) is reshaping how we teach, assess, and support our learners.

At a recent workshop convened by Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI), we launched our ๐๐ซ๐ž๐š๐๐ญ๐ก ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐’๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ž๐š๐ซ๐œ๐ก ๐ซ๐ž๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ and reflected on what CBE looks like in real classrooms.

Hereโ€™s what we found:

โœ”๏ธ Teachers believe in CBE and are committed to nurturing communication and collaboration.
โœ”๏ธ Some competencies โ€” like digital literacy and โ€œlearning to learnโ€ โ€” are not yet consistently embedded.
โœ”๏ธ Gaps in CPD, digital tools, and learning materials continue to limit implementation.
โœ”๏ธ Greater alignment across curriculum, assessment, and teacher support is needed.

The message is clear: curriculum reform alone is not enough. Strengthening teacher support and system coordination will determine whether CBE delivers on its promise.

How can we better support teachers before they enter the classroom?
This was the focus of a workshop hosted by Kenya Education Management Institute alongside African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) and Dignitas Project, bringing together education stakeholders to examine evidence on mentorship and coaching frameworks that support pre-service teachers.

The discussions explored coaching as a key enabler of quality learning, highlighting the need for stronger and more structured mentorship systems during teaching practicum. Bridging the gap between teacher preparation and classroom realities will require closer collaboration between Teacher Training Colleges, practicum schools, and education stakeholders.

The workshop also marked the launch of our ๐‚๐จ๐š๐œ๐ก๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ญ ๐’๐œ๐š๐ฅ๐ž ๐๐ข๐ฅ๐จ๐ญ ๐‘๐ž๐ฉ๐จ๐ซ๐ญ, officially launched by DR. MAURICE ODONDO PhD. The report shares insights on strengthening coaching systems to better support educators and improve teaching practice.

Strengthening mentorship and coaching during teacher training ensures that the transition from training to the classroom is guided, supported, and impactful. We will be sharing more detailed insights from the report soon.
