How safe are your pets and small children in the house?
Babies, toddlers and pets are at a higher risk of drowning in the home than everyone else is at risk of the same outside the home and in bodies of water.
This is because of their size as well as their curious nature and it's very important to know and understand what the risks are, how to prevent them and what to do when anything happens.
As a swimming coach who has been swimming since I was around 1yr old and my experience as a coach for close to 15yrs as well as going through the various stages of swimming and coaching, I will share some of the knowledge that I have been blessed with so that you can learn how to keep your loved ones safe.
1. Learning how to swim and teaching your children and even pets is the best way to ensure everybody's safety. Swimming is not a luxury but a lifesaving skill that can and will save your and your loved ones lives if needed. Therefore it should be on your to-do list of things you want and need to do in this life when you are able to. And if you are a Muslim, it's a Sunnah that will earn you lots of baraqah and goodness for doing.
2. If you have small humans and pets in the house, you should always ensure that all places that have water are well secured.
- Make sure that all containers of water are properly and securely covered so that they cannot access them or accidentally fall into the containers.
- Don't leave water in the bathtub if you have one or a few if the door is easily opened by them, it's better and safer to keep the door locked or to drain the water before leaving.
- Keep the toilet out of reach for them unless they are supervised by someone who is an adult. Locking the door is best and safest when there is no one using it.
- Keep alert and vigilant with them at all times and make sure that any staff that you have know and understand this. Don't allow toddlers to wander off outside especially if there are any bodies of water nearby, no matter their size.

Never be in or around any body of water alone no matter how good a swimmer you may be. Accidents happen and you may need someone who can help and save you or run and call for help.
Water is a very unpredictable creation that can turn at the blink of an eye and become dangerous and unsafe without warning sometimes.
Even the best swimmer in the world should never swim alone because even the best of skills and techniques cannot save them if anything happens when they are in the water, even in a pool.
Learning how to swim, and your loved ones learning how to swim from a good dedicated and knowledgeable coach is best, especially one who is safety conscious and teaches safety, survival and rescue together with swimming. We should also get as much knowledge as we can about water safety and the behaviour of bodies of water, after all there is more water than land in this planet that we have been placed in, and therefore this is something that is vital and important for our own safety and the safety of our loved ones and the people around us.
Swimming is a very important Sunnah and The Almighty knows best why He made it among the Sunnah, and we can see many many reasons why even if we can't know them all.
Swimming is one of the physical activities and sports that helps us on so many levels, with so many health issues, problems and conditions and is the easiest to do and get a whole range of benefits and goodness from it.
Learn how to swim and not only get many thawaab, blessings and goodness, but also get The Pleasure of your Lord The Most High.

Drowning is not as dramatic as it seems in movies. It is quick and silent, so recognizing a swimmer who is struggling is vital to their survival.
Here are some key signs of drowning to watch for:
Struggling to make forward progress
Body vertical in water with arms moving at the sides
Mouth bobbing at water level
Head tilted back, trying to stay afloat
If you spot someone displaying these signs, always err on the side of caution and assume they need help. Quick action can save a life.
Call 9-1-1 and find something to extend to the person, like a reaching pole, or throw a ring bouy.
Remember, your safety is crucial too. Never enter the water unless you're trained in rescue. By reaching or throwing, you can provide lifesaving assistance without putting yourself at risk.
Let's stay alert and keep our waters safer for everyone!

Isolated natural aquatic environments, such as rivers and creeks, increase the risk of drowning due to changeable conditions and often geographical remoteness. Risk-taking behaviour involving poor-decision making, such as alcohol consumption, not wearing a lifejacket and swimming alone, all compound this risk.
Rivers and creeks claim more lives each year than any other waterway in Australia.
Many inland waterways are in regional and remote locations so it is vital to go prepared. Simple safety measures can make all the difference between a great day out and a tragedy.
