Six hours, three small boys, one very hot lunch.
We hiked down Ol Njorowe Gorge in Hell’s Gate to Hell’s Kitchen, where the geothermal springs are hot enough to boil eggs. So naturally, that’s exactly what we did.
Ol Njorowe means “hot river”, which makes perfect sense once you’re down there. The Maasai once lived in this gorge and used the hot springs for cooking. Today, you can hike right down into it, scramble through the gorge, stand under naturally hot water and cook your lunch straight from the earth.
Our five-year-old managed the whole thing, although he is basically a monkey. There are definitely some tricky climbing sections, so take your time.
If you want to do it:
1. Enter Hell’s Gate through Elsa Gate.
2. Drive to Ol Njorowe Gorge.
3. Pick up one of the local Maasai guides there.
4. Bring plenty of drinking water.
5. Don’t drink the river water.
6. Bring some eggs.
Allow plenty of time. It took us about six hours with small kids, plenty of stops and a very leisurely boiled-egg lunch.
One of the best little adventures you can have around Naivasha.
