Mount Kenya is the only mountain that gave a country its name, being central to Kenya's identity
The name is derived from the Kikuyu name Kirinyaga or the Kamba name Kii Nyaa/Kiinyaa, which means "mountain of whiteness" or "place of the ostrich" due to the snow-capped peak and black rock. Early German explorer Johann Ludwig Krapf recorded the name as "Kenia" in the 19th century, which eventually became the name of the country.
