How to improve badminton doubles positioning? 🏸👇

Improving your doubles positioning in badminton is less about running harder and more about moving smarter with your partner. Most problems come from spacing, timing, and not switching formations at the right moment. Here’s how to tighten it up.

1. Understand the two core formations

Side-by-side (defensive)

* Used when you’re under pressure (e.g. opponent smashing).
* Both players cover half the court each—left/right.
* Stay slightly staggered (one a bit forward) so you’re not flat-footed.

Front-back (attacking)

* Used when your side is controlling the rally.
* Rear player smashes/clears/drops.
* Front player hunts for interceptions and net kills.

👉 The biggest mistake: staying side-by-side when you should switch to attack.

2. Rotate naturally, not rigidly

Rotation isn’t fixed—it flows with the rally.

* If you lift → both move side-by-side
* If your partner smashes → you move forward (front-back)
* If you’re pulled out wide:
* Your partner should shift to cover the open space
* You recover diagonally, not straight back

Think of it like a sliding system, not two players glued to zones.

3. Control the front player role

The front player is often underused at amateur level.

* Stand slightly behind the service line (not glued to the net)
* Be ready to:
* Intercept drives
* Kill weak returns
* Force lifts

Good front players win points without smashing.

4. Keep spacing tight (but not overlapping)

* Ideal gap between partners: ~2–3 meters
* Avoid:
* Standing too close → you clash rackets
* Standing too far → gaps open up

A simple rule:
👉 If you can’t cover a fast drive between you, you’re too far apart.

5. Communicate constantly

Even simple cues help:

* “Mine” / “yours”
* “Switch”
* “Leave”

Top doubles pairs like Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Marcus Fernaldi Gideon rely heavily on fast, clear communication—not just skill.

6. Anticipate, don’t react

Watch:

* Opponent’s racket angle
* Body position
* Speed of approach

This lets you move before the shot is hit, which is crucial in doubles.

7. Practice specific drills

Try these:

* Rotation drill
* One pair attacks, one defends
* Switch roles after each rally
* Drive exchange drill
* Stay side-by-side and practice fast flat rallies
* Front court interception drill
* One player feeds, front player cuts everything off

8. Common positioning mistakes to fix

* Both players going for the same shot
* Front player standing too close to the net
* Not switching to attack after a weak return
* Rear player not recovering to center after wide shots.
