We spent two days asking a room full of problem-solvers to stop solving problems.

A full house for our second Coaching Foundations in Siem Reap.

The people in this room know a lot. Business owners, organisational leaders, teachers, counsellors and parents. Most are experienced and used to being the person with the answers.

Coaching asks them to put down the tools they know so well.

Instead of solving the problem in front of their client, they learn to get curious about the person facing it.

That’s hard when you’re good at what you do.

But when they managed it, something deeper happened. They discovered more about themselves, which allowed them to see the problem differently. And from there, the solution became more meaningful.

The problem gets addressed, but the person grows too.

What moved me most was their willingness to be beginners again.

People shared real things about themselves. They tried something unfamiliar. They fumbled. They learned. And they did it in front of their peers.

That takes courage.

The people they lead, teach and parent will feel the difference.

Why do mentors and business consultants invest in coaching training?

Many mentors and business consultants already have years of experience in their fields, from finance and investment to HR, operations, logistics, and hospitality.

They have valuable knowledge to share with their clients and mentees.

But expertise alone doesn't always tell you which support someone needs, which advice they'll apply, or what’s really holding them back.

For the past four years, Cambodia Coaching Institute has worked with business consultants and mentors to develop core coaching skills.

Good mentorship can change how an entrepreneur sees what’s possible.

Last Saturday, 12 September, we were at American University of Phnom Penh (AUPP) for the Entrepreneurship Mentor Development Program.

The event brought mentors and mentees together to explore what effective mentorship can look like in practice.

For mentors, it’s about knowing when to share experience, when to ask questions, and how to support someone without taking over their journey.

For mentees, it’s about having someone who can listen, challenge their thinking, and help them see possibilities they may not have considered on their own.

Strong mentorship isn’t about having all the answers.
It’s about creating the kind of relationship where learning can happen in both directions.

This programme is part of a wider effort to build a stronger pool of mentors for entrepreneurs in Cambodia and create more opportunities for people to grow through meaningful mentorship.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at AUPP and contributed to the conversations.
Mentorship grows when people are willing to learn from each other.

The two days end. What changes after?

A coaching course is only two days.

What people do with those skills afterwards can stay with them for years and impact the people in their lives.

At Cambodia Coaching Institute, we’ve seen people take coaching into their work, their leadership, their businesses, and their relationships at home.

Some have built coaching practices.
Some have brought coaching into their organisations.
Some have written about leadership.
And some have told us the biggest changes happened in the relationships closest to them.

How much of your potential are you actually using?

As a leader, when was the last time you had time to stop and reflect?

Leaders spend a lot of time supporting others, making decisions, and dealing with what needs to happen next.

Sometimes, there’s very little space to step back and look at yourself.

Sokny Onn shared that one of the things she valued about her coaching training experience was simply having the space to explore her values, connect with other participants, and reflect.

“Just being in the room, exploring my values, and connecting to other participants gave me so much more knowledge and reflection. Normally, we don’t have time for that.”
That space for reflection can be easy to miss when you’re busy leading and supporting others.

Sometimes leadership development starts with making space to look at yourself.
