This interview with Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office presents Green Bamboo Cambodia’s approach to bamboo as a practical resource for construction, livelihoods, and sustainable tourism in Cambodia.
The article outlines our experience across the bamboo value chain and our focus on connecting local actors rather than rushing development. Some initiatives require time and alignment; others remain under consideration. What is already in place is field knowledge, dialogue, and collaboration with people working directly with bamboo.
Thank you to everyone contributing to and supporting this work.

🌍 World Bamboo Day 2024 – Reflections from Chiang Mai
Last year, Green Bamboo Cambodia had the privilege to join the global bamboo community at the Faculty of Architecture, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai to celebrate World Bamboo Day.
This international gathering highlighted the growing role of bamboo in:
• Architecture & Design — sustainable solutions that merge tradition with innovation
• Education — inspiring models like Panyaden International School
• Community & Culture — reconnecting global leaders, pioneers, and new voices in the bamboo movement
From the conference to site visits with Chiangmai Life Architects & Construction CLA & CLC and Zabb-E Lee Thai Cooking School, the experience reaffirmed how bamboo is more than a material — it is a catalyst for ecological, cultural, and social transformation. 🌱
As we mark World Bamboo Day 2025, we continue to celebrate bamboo’s potential to inspire, connect, and build resilient futures.

Reconnecting with Bamboo — A New Phase for Green Bamboo Cambodia
Founded in 2020, Green Bamboo Cambodia emerged as a personal and community-rooted initiative to explore bamboo as a material for sustainable living, conscious creation, and eco-construction. It was driven by a clear intent: to build with nature, experiment with low-impact models, and imagine spaces where creativity, healing, and community could grow in harmony.
While the early vision took shape through research, prototyping, and community engagement, the initiative encountered significant disruptions — from the global pandemic to land-related challenges and project misalignments. These realities required the project to pause, reassess, and reflect.
Now entering a new phase, Green Bamboo Cambodia project is reconnecting with its foundational purpose — with more clarity, grounded learning, and a long-term perspective. As part of this step forward, the initiative is engaging in the Pablo Luna Studio Bamboo Masterclass to deepen knowledge of bamboo architecture, construction techniques, and design integration.
“This is not a new beginning — it’s a continuation with clearer intention,” says founder Caroline Chau
“We are building a meaningful path that balances structure with soul, creativity with responsibility, and vision with reality.”
The first masterclass session on Curves offered practical insight into working with bamboo’s natural flexibility to design stable, resilient structures. The upcoming focus on Joints will further explore the technical connectors essential to safe, enduring bamboo construction.
Green Bamboo Cambodia remains committed to its mission: to contribute to regenerative design, local empowerment, and sustainable building practices in Cambodia and beyond.
Thank you to Pablo Luna Studio for creating a space for shared learning and community-driven innovation.

🌿 Bamboo as a Bridge Between Nature, Craft, and Architecture 🌿
At Green Bamboo Cambodia, we believe in the transformative power of bamboo — not just as a sustainable material, but as a way to connect people, culture, and environment.
This bamboo architecture, made from bamboo grown in Kampong Cham and brought to life by six skilled craftsmen, is a powerful example of what’s possible when local knowledge, artisan skills, and natural resources are aligned. From structural design to light flow and aesthetic form, every element respects the nature of bamboo while highlighting its strength and elegance.
More than just construction — this is collaboration. A partnership between Green Bamboo Cambodia and Kiri Bamboo - គិរី ប៊ែមប៊ូ, this project reflects what we aim to nurture: a movement where traditional techniques meet thoughtful design, where artisans are empowered, and where bamboo plays a central role in shaping Cambodia’s sustainable future.
We continue to advocate for bamboo development in Cambodia — as a resource, as an art, and as a way forward.
