Today marks the 2570th anniversary of the Buddha's Parinirvana (passing away), the traditional starting point of the Buddhist Era calendar, widely observed in Theravada Buddhist countries such as Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. 🛕

It is also a special day to remind us of the extraordinary achievement of the Buddha's Enlightenment, overcoming all defilements of the mind through his own efforts in meditation. 💡

Many Buddhists celebrate today by visiting temples, pagodas and offering alms to the monks to attain great merit. However, the Buddha himself instructed his followers of the proper way to honor him as such in the Mahāparinibbānasutta Sutta DN 16: 📜

"Any monk or nun or male or female lay follower who practices in line with the teaching, practicing properly, living in line with the teaching—they honor, respect, revere, venerate, and esteem the Realized One with the highest honor." 🙏

Therefore, let us not be complacent through merely offering nice objects and nice words of prayer at the shrine, while letting our minds remain trapped in the quagmire of ignorance - living an unconscious, immoral life! ⚠️

Let us honor the Buddha on this day and every day by practicing his teachings, by training our minds according to the Noble Eightfold Path! 🛤️
