Cheick Out The Goal

16/06/2015

By Anthony Marshall

Cheick Tiote's stunning late leveller for Newcastle against Arsenal may have taken all the 51,000-plus crowd at St. James' Park by surprise, but boss Alan Pardew was not one of them.
Before Saturday's 4-4 draw the midfielder was yet to find the back of the net or even look like troubling the scorers, but he pulled the trigger on the volley from fully 30 yards to complete a brilliant comeback for the Magpies.

Goalscoring may not be Tiote's forte, but his manager knew the ex-FC Twente had that kind of strike in his locker.
"I've watched DVDs of him in Holland. Call Steve McLaren and he'll tell you he can do it," said Pardew.
"It's the first time here he's shown it perhaps.
"Sometimes we can underestimate what a Premier League game is about - the pace and power of it.
"For 20 minutes Cheick was way off the pace. He had been out three games suspended, couldn't get near anyone, made a couple of errors.
"But thank God he got to the pace of the game and showed what a quality player he is."

Tiote Gets Through Un-Cheick-en

16/06/2015

By Dan King
Magpies midfielder Cheick Tiote was on the winning side on Tuesday night as Ivory Coast beat Mali in an international friendly.
Tiote, who was winning his 15th cap, played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 win sealed by Didier Ya Konan's first-half goal, and the Newcastle man will now report back ahead of the weekend game at Blackburn.
Young defender Jamie Smith also played the whole game as Republic of Ireland under-17s lost 1-0 to their Italy counterparts. The two sides play again on Thursday night.

On Wednesday night, young left-back Paul Dummett's Wales under-21s take on a Northern Ireland under-21 side featuring Shane Ferguson and Patrick McLaughlin at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham.
And Tim Krul is in the Holland under-21 squad to face Czech Republic in Waalwijk, while Ole Soderberg is in the Sweden under-21 squad which has travelled to play Portugal in Cartaxo.

Tiote Still Searching For Sharpness

16/06/2015

By Dan King - Newcastle United Communications Officer
The hero of last season's 4-4 thriller with Arsenal was also a vital part of the Newcastle team who gained another draw - albeit with eight fewer goals scored - on Saturday.
But Cheik Tiote admitted that he did not feel "100 per cent" after his pre-season campaign was disrupted by a trip to Ghana while a routine work permit application was processed.
He only returned to Tyneside on Wednesday, and although he was accompanied to West Africa by Magpies physio Derek Wright, he missed a number of training sessions with his team-mates as well as the friendlies against Leeds and Fiorentina.

And in an exclusive interview with nufc.co.uk Tiote - who hit the memorable equaliser against The Gunners last season as United came back from four goals down - explained that he didn't feel at his best against The Gunners.
"I'm not feeling 100 per cent because I missed a few days of full training when I went to deal with the visa," he said. "I'm a little bit sad because I missed some training and I missed two games before the season started, and it's important for me to be fit.
"On Saturday I was not happy because I was not 100 per cent on the pitch, but I think after two or three games I will be okay and back to full sharpness."
However, the Ivorian was pleased with the result against Arsenal - and is already turning his attention to next weekend's derby against Sunderland.
"I thought we played very good," Tiote said. "It was a hard game to have as the first game for the season and I think we are happy with the result.
"You must play to win, but on this occasion a draw was a good result, I think.
"But now we need to be focussed about the next game and not to think about the game against Arsenal. We must forget about the game against Arsenal and think about Sunderland."
