🌞 Hello, Nevis! I'm back on island and looking forward to another season together!

It's been a full and enriching few months abroad. Alongside teaching and hosting at some groovy festivals and events, I was able to spend some time investing in the expansion of my own practice and education.

This included traveling to Montreal for advanced Thai Yoga Massage training and exploring some other unique bodywork modalities with my teacher, Sukha Wong, as well as continuing my specialty training with Jo Phee, a world-renowned educator in the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupressure, and fascia research into yoga.

I'm committed to continually expanding my knowledge and deepening my own practice so that I can bring something meaningful, distinctive, and transformative to our sessions. I believe our journeys are beautifully interconnected: as I continue to learn and grow, I bring that experience into the space we share, while your practice enriches mine in return. I'm deeply grateful for that connection and the opportunity to be part of your journey.

For me, yoga has never been just about the physical practice. It's an invitation to explore the deeper layers of who we are and discover new ways to feel, move through life, and connect with something greater within ourselves.

I'm excited to bring fresh inspiration, support, and guidance to your practice in the season ahead!

SOMETHING NEW THIS SEASON!

More details coming soon!

✨️A FEW MORE THINGS IN THE WORKS✨️

This season will also bring some updates to class pricing and packages as well as the pilot launch of the Open Door Yoga Fund which helps make regular practice more accessible for Nevis residents.

And for those of you who aren't currently on the island, I have some opportunities for us to practice together online!

Private Instruction and Bodywork sessions are available by appointment starting mid-November. Try something different: Thai Yoga Massage, Ayurvedic Marma Therapy, Yin Bodywork, Tok Sen, and Meridian Massage

There's plenty to look forward to, and I'll share more about everything over the coming weeks. For now, I simply wanted to say hi and let you know how much I'm looking forward to another season of learning, exploring, and expanding consciousness together.

Whether you're returning to the mat, joining for the first time, or following from afar, I look forward to connecting.

Here's to another season of growth, discovery, and meaningful practice together.

Recently I read a comment from someone who said that they don’t attend live Yoga classes anymore. They don't need to. There are an abundance of free videos and apps online.

That's fair, but it got me thinking.

On most days, I have food in my refrigerator. I still occasionally go out to a restaurant and enjoy someone else's cooking.

I have access to just about every kind of music on my phone. But I still like to go out an enjoy some live music once in awhile.

I can get an AI regurgitated summary on any topic I want in a matter of seconds. But when it comes to topics of importance, I prefer to read words thoughtfully crafted by an actual person with wisdom and years of experience in the subject.

Etc. Etc. Etc.

I am not saying that you should attend my offerings if it's not your jam.

But I think it is more important than ever to make the effort to humanize our activities and how we spend our time and money.

In years to come it is going to get increasingly difficult not to succumb to convenience that will drive us further and further away from each other. We may not be able to stop the proliferation of technology, but we can influence the world in a big way by being intentional in how we move through our lives.

Prioritize small businesses over billionaire corporations. Give some extra love to people who have resisted surrendering their voice and creativity to AI. Support grass-roots professionals, artists, musicians, healers and other humans trying to make their way in this sometime difficult and hostile world.

Let's not sacrifice human connection for the sake of the cheapest option. Choose soul over convenience.

That's a wrap for this year's Pretty Lake Yoga series.

I want to thank everyone who participated as well as the Pretty Lake Conservation Club for accommodating these sessions again this summer.

Even though the series has ended, that doesn't mean that we cannot sustain the momentum and continue the journey. Yoga is a powerful tool not just for feeling better in the moment, but for catalyzing lasting shifts in the way that we think, feel, and interact with our internal and external worlds. These tools become more powerful when we practice consistently - despite the excuses and objections that our minds naturally conjure up.

Whether it is with me, another teacher, or on your own, I wholeheartedly encourage you to continue what you started this summer. Don't let weeks and months pass before making time to deliberately release accumulative tension in the body, mobilize the life force, and seek out the stillness within.

I would love to be your accomplice in this endeavor...to guide a practice that you may not feel confident doing on your own, or would otherwise lose track of without inspiration and support.

Here are some ways we can stay connected and continue practicing together:

My Pretty Lake season is nearing the end.

I blinked and it was September, almost October! These transitions are often difficult, but I love that my lifestyle can be fluid. I love that I have this place to come home to.

Before I go, I have just one more opportunity for us to gather face-to-face and practice together.

This Tuesday is the final class for this year's Restore and Reconnect - Therapeutic Yoga @ Pretty Lake. Be sure to reserve your spot!

I also have just a few remaining Thai Yoga sessions available at BeBalanced Yoga & Wellness in Angola on Friday October 2nd: 11:00am, 3:00pm, and 7:00pm

🌸🌿🦋

I have had some special animal encounters while practicing in the sanctuary of my mom's house this summer. Most recently me and these young twins have been watching each other with curiosity.

I look forward to seeing you this Tuesday at 6:00pm at the Pretty Lake Conservation Club.

The Rooted Vegan 🌿 My go-to for lunch and treats when I am in Angola, Indiana.

Today I had the protein bowl, mushroom autumn harvest "coffee", and pumpkin spice doughnut. All 100% vegan.

I am so happy this place exists and that they continue to thrive. Be sure to bless up small businesses, they are the Soul of our community.

Yoga is not cool anymore…and I am totally here for it.

When my Yoga journey began 28 years ago, the practice was growing in popularity, but it was not quite mainstream. Classes could be found in New York City, where I was living at the time, but when I visited home in rural Indiana, Yoga was virtually unknown…not a class or teacher to be found. Eager for others to experience the ancient practice that was transforming me, I felt inspired to train to become a Yoga teacher. That was in 2005.

Around this same time there was a Yoga explosion, and everywhere felt the ripples…even rural Indiana. Studios and trainings started popping up. Suddenly it seemed like everyone was practicing Yoga…and a few months later, everyone was teaching it. Fashionable yoga clothes bombarded the market. Yoga was trendy…hip…in many cases with an air of snobby exclusivity.

Like anything in fashion, the market quickly became commercialized, saturated…stretched in a million different directions. The population leaned into the philosophy with curiosity, but it was ultimately the wellness and fitness aspects (a relatively small sliver of the entirety of Yoga) that the masses latched on to. 5,000+ years of sacred wisdom was gradually reduced to a superficial workout routine.

Then came the gimmicks…beer yoga, goat yoga, yoga for a sexy booty…you name it. Take anything (anything!) and attach the word Yoga and it was sure to sell. Attractive model-esque influencers doing impressive things with their seemingly perfect bodies became the face of the Yoga revolution. Yoga Teacher training factories churned out overnight “experts” trained to instruct cookie cutter poses and choreographed flows, with little regard for the world beneath the surface.

Somewhere in all this noise and regurgitation, the depth and meaning of Yoga was lost. The vast majority of the population may not have understood what Yoga was about, but the Yoga industry didn’t seem to care. Yoga was cool, and everyone was getting in on the action.

As a growing teacher with a profound reverence for the tradition of Yoga, I went through several identity crises over those years. On a few occasions, I temporarily gave up teaching. It was a confusing and conflicting time. Fashionable fitness gurus dominated the market. Modern yoga had a distinct image, and I didn’t fit into that image (nor did I want to). On a number of occasions it was implied that I was not a quality teacher because I didn’t make people sweat. I was once was turned down for a job because I was told that what I was teaching was more “meditation” and not really “Yoga”. I’ll admit, there was temptation to give in and provide what the masses demanded, even though it was at odds with the tradition that I had studied.

It took some growth as a person, a Yogi, and a professional, but ultimately I returned to the Yoga world determined to continue to share Yoga, detached from the labels and expectations of pop culture. I understood that my role as a teacher was not to be popular, but to simply carry these ancient threads of wisdom forward - guided by my own personal perspectives and experiences - and to pass them on to anyone who felt them resonate. I had to remind myself time and again…what I have to share is not for everyone. I am not meant to be everyone’s teacher.

Once I was able to embrace my svadharma (personal path) as a teacher, and detach from the outcome, things began to flow a little more easily. Being a Yoga teacher by trade is tricky, because just like everyone in the world, I need to earn a livelihood doing what I do. At times, the need for income can create tension in my pursuits to share Yoga. This has become even more amplified in recent years because interest in Yoga appears to be waning.

Someone recently said to me, “Yoga is soo 10 years ago!” Which struck me as kind of funny, considering that Yoga has been around for (at least) 5,000 years. But there is sort of a law to these things. Anything that comes into fashion, will eventually go out of fashion.

Perhaps the oversaturation of influencers, the trends, the gimmicks, finally took their toll. Yoga gradually became a dime-a-dozen product that was over-used, misunderstood, and eventually under-valued. The mainstream has moved onto new wellness trends and gimmicks, leaving Yoga in the dust. Studios are shutting down. The fashion savvy fitness gurus have moved on to more lucrative horizons.

Yoga is not cool anymore…and I am totally here for it.

Of course, I have always been a bit of a counter-culturalist. There is something really boring about pursuing something simply because everyone else is doing it.

Maybe this is the beginning of a new revolution in Yoga.

Now that Yoga isn’t in fashion anymore, maybe now we can pause in the stillness and reunite with the essence of it. Now that we don’t have to contend with all the noise and labels associated with it, perhaps we can get back to the roots of Yoga - a curious exploration of our inner world.

And maybe, now that Yoga is no longer cool, we finally have a little more space to discover what Yoga really has to offer. Perhaps it is time for a new phase in our evolution.
