Szolnok, April 1966. Cuba’s youthful national team visited the Damjanich Pool for a friendly vs Szolnoki Dózsa, part of a learning tour through Hungary (Budapest, Szentes, Eger, Miskolc). Guided by legendary Hungarian Károly Laky, who was helping build the sport in Cuba, the visitors drew a warm reception. Dózsa won 10–3 — scorers: Kuczora 4, Vidovics 3, Jeney 2, Boros 1 — with confident second-half long-range shooting. Reports highlighted the team’s spirit and very young roster (youngest 14; avg ~19). Contemporary coverage also noted the rapid boom of aquatic facilities in Havana and beyond, fueling Cuba’s water polo ambitions. Referee: Ottó Boros. Standouts for Cuba included goalkeepers García and Martínez. Source: Szolnok Megyei Néplap, 1965-07-22

From Belgrade 1973 to , men’s Water Polo has crowned legends of the game 👑

Can you name them all? Here’s the history! 👀

22/08/2025

Since Paris 1900, men’s Water Polo has held the distinction of being the first Olympic team sport. Its tradition has continued across every era, with the FINA World Championships adding a global stage since their inaugural edition in Belgrade, 1973.
Across more than a century of competition, only twenty athletes have reached the highest mark of Olympic longevity.
Manuel Estiarte (ESP) stands apart as the only player to appear in six Olympic Games. Close behind him, nineteen others have competed five times, representing different countries and generations of the sport.
Among them, Hungary’s Dezső Gyarmati is unique: the only water polo player to win five Olympic medals (3 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze). Together, they remain lasting examples of endurance, excellence, and commitment in Olympic Water Polo.
