Great dives down south last week! The weather was a little sporty, but the conditions below the surface were awesome!

Diving out of Red Bay can be challenging for us. We’re not at our usual dock with our gear locker, fresh water access and indoor plumbing. Plus the weather is usually not postcard perfect if we’re diving south… but the luckily diving is awesome!
The south is riddled with swim thrus, arches and caverns. It’s a great spot for soft corals, the addition of the surge this week made them very hypnotic to watch. We saw just about all the creatures too! Lots of tarpon, barracudas , rays and reef fish! We also had sleepy nurse sharks on almost all our dives.
Overall it was an awesome week of diving. But logistically? I’m glad to back home in our dive shop!
Second loggerhead of the season! I absolutely love this time of year when the big dinosaur turtles come to town. This big ol guy just wanted to find a good place to nap, he probably had a long journey!
The wreck of the Balboa is a hidden gem… hidden right in the middle of the George Town port!
The Balboa was a 375ft cargo ship that wrecked in the George Town harbor during a hurricane in 1932. The captain and crew abandoned the ship, which was carrying lumber that continued to wash ashore during the storm. The captain promised that if no one was hurt during the storm, he would use that lumber to do something beneficial. True to his word, he later used the lumber to help build a church on the waterfront.
Today the Balboa is scattered in 25-40 feet of water right in the middle of the port. It’s rare to get an opportunity to dive as it is right in the middle of the port traffic. We can only dive the wreck when there are no cruise or cargo ships in port and it is still up to the discretion of Port Authority.
When we do get the opportunity, it never disappoints. The wreck is teeming with life, large schools of reef fish, stingrays, tarpon and the occasional turtle or eagle ray.
We see it so often: divers get so excited to see something that they chase it off.
The best way to observe marine life is to slow down, and better yet, let them come to you. Chasing a turtle or a stingray isn’t going to get you an amazing photo or video, it’s going to scare them away. Stay put or move slowly and calmly and often times the marine life will get even closer, coming to check you out 😉
