세계야구소프트볼연맹(WBSC)이 이만수 전 SK감독의 동남아시아 야구 전파 활동에 주목했다.

WSBC는 지난 11일 홈페이지에 “이 전 감독의 전반적인 프로젝트는 또한 태국, 캄보디아 및 미얀마에서 야구를 확산시키는 것을 돕는 것이다. 이 전 감독은 라오스에 경기장 건설에 자금을 지원했다”라며 “라오스에 이어 이제 베트남의 야구 활성화라는 새로운 임무를 맡았다”고 밝혔다.

이 전 감독은 WSBC를 통해 “베트남 하노이에 있는 한국 국제 학교의 이장형 선생과 함께 야구를 많이 보지 못한 베트남에 재능을 기부할 계획”이라면서 “나의 꿈은 인도 차이나 반도 5 개국 (라오스, 베트남, 태국, 캄보디아, 미얀마)에서 야구를 할 수 있도록 하는 것”이라고 말했다.

WSBC는 1984년 KBO리그 최초의 트리플 크라운, 포수로 5개의 골든글러브를 받은 이 전 감독의 선수 커리어는 물론 1997년 은퇴해 2000 년부터 2007년까지 메이저 리그 시카고 화이트삭스 코치, 2007년에서 2011년까지 SK의 코치, 감독으로 지낸 지도자 생활도 조명했다.

이 전 감독은 “난 아무것도 하는게 없다. 베트남은 온전히 이장형선생이 다 해 놓았다. 베트남에 들어가 재능기부를 할 뿐이다. 야구인으로서 이렇게 할 수 있어 너무 행복하고 좋다. 동남아에도 조금씩 야구가 탄생하고 발전할 수 있어 야구인으로서 기쁘고 자부심도 난다”며 자신을 낮췄다.

Former KBO star Lee Man-soo plans to boost baseball in Vietnam and Southeast Asia

The overall project also aims to help spread baseball in Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar. Lee was instrumental in funding the construction of a stadium in Laos.

Lee Man-soo, a former gold glove catcher and MVP in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), was instrumental to the development of baseball in Laos. He is now up to a new task: developing baseball in Vietnam.
"I've been working with Lee Juang-hyung of the Korea International School in Hanoi," Lee told the Korean press. "I plan to donate talent for Vietnam, a country that hasn't seen much baseball."
Lee Man-soo has an overall plan for Southeast Asia: "My dream is to develop baseball in all of the five countries of the Indochina peninsula: Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar."
Lee was born in 1958 and was one of the players competing in the inaugural KBO season in 1982. He signed for the Samsung Lions and hit the first home run in the history of the league.
He earned MVP honours in 1983. He won the first Korean Triple Crown (1984) and led the Samsung Lions to the league's title in 1985. Lee Man-soo won 5 Gold Gloves (1983-1987) as a catcher.
He retired in 1997 and coached in the Major League Baseball (MLB) Chicago White Sox organization from 2000 to 2007. He then returned to KBO and coached for the SK Wyverns from 2007 to 2011. He managed the Wyverns from 2011 to 2014 before moving to Laos.
