Sailing News here and there 1962

The Commodore’s Cup, June 4th.
Two rewards were presented for this event, one for the Flying Dutchmen and the other for the Handicap Class.

In spite of a fifteen minute delay, the start of both races, twenty minutes apart, was a procession. It seems inevitable that the first race of every season has half a dozen crews who don’t manage to wake up half an hour earlier in the morning to have their boats prepared. Had all the dinghies been on the starting line on time, the races would certainly have been more interesting.

The last to cross the starting line in the FD race but first to cross it coming back were Myrtle Winter and Lou Hawwa who literally walked away with the trophy. The next time Myrtle wins a race, we should have to suggest to the Racing Committee that she be awarded with a prize for "Antoinette I". Her performances since the beginning of the season have been superb.

The Handicap event was won by Tyd and Penny experienced in the Wayfarer, who were racing against three other dinghies namely two Enterprises, and a Dorcas. Although the Thomas family sail often, it took them time to remind their mast race. So our hats off to this family team as well in the hope this gallant move to the starting line may act as incentive to some other boatowners who have not won a race.

Club Races, June 18th and July 8th
The June 18th race was won by Robert Ardill and Hugh Wylam sailing "Nicola". Windy Sednouai and Bobby Boccacci showed their superiority in "Heurebleue" on July 8th. During both races Karl Bistany and John Skelton were dismasted, the second time because they careened while the mast punctured the port buoyancy tank. Need we write a special article on proper upkeep and maintenance?

Club Races, July 16th and 23rd.
A brisk force 3 Southwesterly settled down before the FDs reached the windward mark. Sednouai and Boccacci were the first to take advantage of the wind change, which increased their lead and led them to victory. Bistany and Skelton won the next race (faith alone must have kept the mast up!) starting with the gun and close observation of wind changes kept them in the lead around the boomerang-shaped course.

Hugh Beard Challenge Cup — July 30th
The Winter - Hawwa team did it again, and without second effort this time. The difference between first and second place was 3’32’’. Speaking of mast luck, so did Bistany and Skelton! If losing it twice in two races was bad luck, it really was not after turning its windward mark. Jacques Crampon in "FD1" retired after finding a tear in the leech of his sail while the foredeck had room enough to accommodate passengers. A pity really, for Jacques has participated in every race in which a double FD race was held. The Thomas family likewise maintained their participation, but too little and too late. We look forward to the results of the national championship this November.
