Saint Lucia’s Karatekas Secure Eight Medals at the Martinique Open K26 Tournament
A 17-member contingent from Saint Lucia proudly represented the island at the Martinique Open K26 Karate Tournament on Saturday, February 28, 2026, competing against athletes from Martinique and Guadeloupe.
The delegation comprised nine athletes between the ages of 10 and 35, three coaches, along with parents and supporters. Also accompanying the team was Cecilia Edgar, President of Cobra Karate and Self-Defense Dojo.
Saint Lucia was represented by two dojos Cobra Karate and Self-Defense Dojo and Kaizen Karate Dojo under the leadership of Sensei Glen Simon, Sensei Anthony Leonce, and Sensei Kareem Sifflet.
The Martinique Open K26 Tournament attracts top regional competitors who compete at a high standard under World Karate Federation (WKF) rules in both Kata and Kumite divisions.
Athletes Representing Saint Lucia
The nine athletes representing Saint Lucia were:
Female Competitors:
• Rose Yadav – 10–11 age group
• Binka Gill – 12–13 age group
• Candace Leberie – 12–13 age group
Male Competitors:
• Liam Ford – 12–14 age group
• Christian Mathews – 12–14 age group
• Allister Simon – 16–17 age group (150 lbs category)
• Jameel Leonce – 18+ age group (185 lbs category)
• Denell Florius – 18+ age group (185 lbs category)
Competing against more seasoned international athletes, Saint Lucia’s team demonstrated resilience, discipline, and commendable fighting spirit. Their efforts resulted in an impressive medal haul of five bronze and three silver medals.
Allister Simon delivered a standout performance and was named Most Outstanding Karateka from Saint Lucia. He secured a bronze medal in Kata, a silver medal in Individual Kumite, and an additional silver medal in a mixed team Kata and Kumite event.
Tournament organizers commended Saint Lucia not only for the strong level of participation but also for being the only non-French-speaking team competing at the event a distinction that highlighted the island’s growing presence on the regional karate stage.
The team returned to Saint Lucia on Sunday, March 1, 2026, with renewed motivation and pride in their achievements.
