Most runners reach for energy gels or sports drinks before workouts. Dates might deliver comparable benefits at a fraction of the cost - but the claims here need serious scrutiny.
Dates contain approximately 66% sugar by weight (primarily glucose and fructose), providing rapid-absorbing carbohydrates that raise blood glucose levels within 15-20 minutes. They also deliver potassium (important for muscle contraction) and magnesium (involved in energy metabolism).
Here's where this post goes off the rails: the claim that dates "improve performance by up to 20% in endurance runs" lacks credible scientific support. No peer-reviewed research demonstrates 20% performance improvements from eating dates versus other carbohydrate sources.
Simply put: dates are carbohydrates. They work because carbs fuel exercise, not because dates possess magical properties other carb sources lack. Research from Dr. Asker Jeukendrup shows that carbohydrate type matters far less than total amount and timing for performance.
Unfortunately, the "15-20% increase in endurance" claim appears fabricated or drastically misrepresents actual study findings. Quality sports nutrition research rarely shows single-digit performance improvements, let alone 15-20% gains from fruit choice.
The good news? Dates are legitimate pre-workout fuel - they're portable, shelf-stable, and provide digestible carbohydrates. Consuming 3-5 dates (roughly 60-100g carbs) 30-60 minutes pre-run follows established fueling guidelines.
The bottom line? Dates work as pre-run fuel because they're carbohydrates, not because they're superior to bananas, energy bars, or any other carb source. Skip the exaggerated performance claims and recognize them as convenient, affordable fuel.

Auch in diesem Jahr war der FHGR Trail in der Region Lenzerheide der Hauptwettkampf unseres Athleten Franz Felsberger. Aufgrund des schlechten Wetters musste die Strecke allerdings verkürzt und auch um fast 1000 hm reduziert werden. Doch Franz ließ sich davon nur wenig beeindrucken und lieferte wieder eine🔝 Leistung ab: für die 39 km und 1900 hm benötigte er 4:26h womit er klar und deutlich seine Altersklasse M50 gewinnen und den 8. Gesamtrang erreichen konnte. 🥇👏💪👌🥳
