BSAC Sports Diver Programme 2024 foreign exchange studen Martina with the STCSAC.

SO2 - Surface Marker Buoy

A Sports Diver is expected to be familiar with many types of equipment that would aid them in whatever the dive they plan to do for a known site.

One such piece of equipment is a SMB. Knowledge of when, where and how to use one is important for the safety of both divers in a buddy group.

Need to know...
• Be able to use the SMB during all phases of a dive
• Understand the impact of the environment on the use of the SMB and vice versa
• Further practice and refinement of buoyancy and trim skills to gold standard

Our thanks to Sports Diver for assisting Instructor as Martina's buddy on this module.

Scuba Regulator Configurations

The majority of diver training operators in Sri Lanka are accredited to PADI the global leader in scuba training and a few SSI operators.

All such operators configure and train students to use the common reg setup of SPG, BCD inflator hoes to the left and both primary and secondary DV's to the right (see image 1).

We on the BSAC programme of qualifications however configure our reg such our secondary DV, BCD inflator hose is to the left and the primary DV, SPG console is to the right (see image 2).

So what you may ask?

1. What if a buddy pair are both of different configurations?

2. Have they been trained to handle out of air or rescue situations when a buddies configuration is different to what they were trained?

These are but a few practical situations you may encounter when you dive overseas.

We at the STCSAC teach our students to be able to dive with any buddy, using any configuration.

The key is to carry out a thorough pre dive buddy check and knowledge share what process is to be followed in either situation.

After all, it's about enjoying a dive in the safest way possible.
