Did you know?

Our mentality has a huge influence over our performance. The fancier term for it is Sports Psychology which means: “the mental processes and behaviors of people within sport”.

There are 5 key areas of sports psychology:

- Commitment: there are many reasons why players are committed to a sport! Having a ‘goal’ is a very good way to motivate you to keep going
- Confidence: you need to believe in yourself and stay away from the expectations of others and focus on what you can control
- Control: you can get nervous during a game, so you need to learn how to control your emotions by using techniques such as ‘deep breathing’ to calm yourselves
- Concentration: imagery can be used to help you concentrate to improve their game
- Cohesion: you need to learn how to work well with groups of people

Remember: improving your mentality is just as important as improving your skills!

Which one of the above areas is your strength? Please share in the comment below!

Around the ages of 10 and 16, children will experience a period of rapid growth. This is known as the ‘growth spurt’. Some children will experience the growth spurt earlier (around 10) or later (around 14).

During the growth spurt, children may experience balance and co-ordination challenges. It’s important to remind them that this is okay and temporary!

Coaches and adults can help players during the growth spurt by:
• being patient
• encouraging good technique
• avoiding too much repetition in practices that could lead to more injuries
• encouraging flexibility
• playing on appropriate surfaces
