Planning a dive trip to Sri Lanka between October 2026 and April 2027? Avoid the #1 mistake international divers make. 🚫🌊
Every year, hundreds of divers book fixed beach resort packages based on generic travel blogs, only to find themselves on the wrong side of the island during a monsoon shift.
As the Northeast monsoon takes hold, the East Coast (Trincomalee/Batticaloa) shuts down completely. If you want pristine visibility, calm surface intervals, and world-class wreck exploration over the next six months, your target destination is the West and South Coast (Colombo, Negombo, Hikkaduwa, Galle, and Kirinda).
At 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗿𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗟𝗔𝗞𝗠𝗜𝗡, we don't trap you in one location. Our customized Land & Sea Safaris seamlessly adapt to YOU.

🚢 The Colombo Wreck Belt (Oct/Nov – April): Dive over 25 major shipwrecks acting as thriving artificial reefs. Explore breathtaking, intact giants like the stern of the MV Thermopylae Sierra resting at 23 meters (pictured below), alongside deep historical relics documented by legendary explorer Dharshana Jayawardena. Almost all in Recreational 'Advance' to 'Deep'
🐢 The Southwestern Loop (Nov – March): Perfect for OW divers. Explore the historic steamers, caves, and vibrant soft coral reefs of Hikkaduwa and Galle. Few good wrecks in 'Advance' Depth if you happen to be there
🐆 The Wild Southeast (Feb-Mar): A highly exclusive weather window opens up the spectacular underwater structures and pelagic action at the Great Basses Reef in Kirinda.
Stop trying to guess the monsoon windows on a rigid itinerary. We blend elite, tailor-made dive expeditions with private inland travel from tracking leopards on safari to boutique villa stays.

Sri Lanka - A Tech Diver’s Nightmare? 🇱🇰
For a seasoned technical diver, Sri Lanka can be a frustrating contradiction. If your idea of a perfect dive trip requires choosing between dozens of 70m–100m wrecks backed by a massive commercial CCR infrastructure, this isn't it. The deep reality of diving here relies currently on 3 legendary technical hits:🚢 HMS Hermes (53m) – The world’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier.🚢 SS Worcestershire (58m) & MV Tricolor (64m) – Pristine, deep-water technical challenges. The technical ecosystem simply hasn't caught up yet either. Gas logistics are tight, specialized equipment support is limited, and surface support for serious deep diving requires meticulous planning.
But look past the infrastructure gap, and the actual proposition changes entirely.

Beyond the extreme deep hits, Sri Lanka bridges the gap with 25+ quality wrecks sitting right at the Advanced to Deep recreational limits (30m – 40m). Wrecks like the Perseus (40m) might not hunt extreme depth, but they offer incredible pe*******on, rich marine life, and spectacular structural exploration that a "depth-only" hunter completely misses out on.Combined with short boat rides, close-to-shore sites, and affordable land-based luxury between dive days, the value proposition shifts completely. The raw potential is unmatched. you just need the right team to unlock it.
🤿 Ready to bridge the gap between deep exploration and world-class wreck diving?

The Wallet Wreck | Sri Lanka
40 metres down. A wreck with no known history. Just colonies of colour and activity.
The Wallet Wreck lies off Colombo, close to ultra famous Perseus.
It is a small, strangely shaped wreck with two distinctive platforms, now heavily colonised by soft corals.
And here's the interesting part:
We still don't really know its story.
Its original name, age, date of sinking and exactly how it went down remain unknown.
What we do know is what's there today.
Soft corals. Fish. Cavities. Swim-throughs. And plenty of structure to explore.
At around 40 metres, this is a wreck for DEEP certified. Nitrox is mandatory.
For underwater photographers, there is plenty to work with wreck structure, coral, fish and blue-water backgrounds.
When?

Colombo's wreck season is generally November to April, with February and March often offering good conditions and impressive visibility.
But as we know, nature gets the final say.

Getting there
The old descriptions of the Wallet involved a long run from Colombo.
That's changed.
Approach from north of Colombo and the boat journey is considerably shorter, making this previously less-accessible wreck much more practical to include in a Colombo wreck itinerary.

GODAWAYA | 2nd C. BC | OLDEST KNOWN WOODEN SHIPWRECK IN THE ASIA-PACIFIC

More than 2,100 years ago, a wooden vessel went down off the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
Today, the Godawaya shipwreck is recognised by Sri Lanka’s Central Cultural Fund as the oldest known wooden shipwreck in the Asia-Pacific region.
What makes the story particularly interesting is how the site came to the attention of archaeologists.
In 2003, two local fishermen and divers from Godawaya encountered unusual material while diving for conch. A stone quern they recovered eventually came to the attention of archaeologists, helping lead to the investigation of the site.
Subsequent archaeological work has documented pottery, grinding stones, glass and metal ingots, carnelian beads and other material.
Together, these finds provide evidence of early seafaring and the movement of goods across the Indian Ocean more than two millennia ago.
The wreck lies at approximately 31–33 metres and is very different from the modern wrecks normally associated with Sri Lankan diving.
Godawaya is an underwater cultural heritage site, and it is still being researched.
For divers, that means approaching it differently, with respect for the archaeological site, appropriate technical capability, careful planning and the necessary permissions and conditions.

THE CHIEF DRAGON - COLOMBO CAR WRECK

Northwest of Colombo lies one of Sri Lanka’s signature wreck dives -MV Chief Dragon, better known to divers as the Colombo Car Wreck.

The 112-metre vehicle carrier sank on 18 March 1983 after a catastrophic fire. During the years of the war, the wreck lay within the restricted security zone around Colombo Port. Parts of the vessel were later blown apart by the Sri Lankan Navy to reduce the hazard to shipping, leaving the main hull upright with a substantial debris field around it.

Today, the wreck runs from around 24 metres on the upper deck to approximately 33 (?) metres on the seabed.

There are still car chassis and axles on the wreck, while the broken sections have become a thriving artificial reef, attracting large schools of fish and bigger predators.

Strong current is almost part of the Chief Dragon experience.

If the anchor is hooked up-current, the dive can be beautifully simple: let the current carry you along its length. The dive can finish with a blue-water ascent, and the boat pick the divers up.

If the anchor is down-current, the wreck becomes your sheler to get a place to commence your dive down current

A DM that knows the wreck intimately, an experienced boat captain and Nitrox are mandatory essentials.

When the conditions come together, 30 metres of visibility is not unusual.

The Chief Dragon is a big wreck. One dive only gives you about half of an experience.

Some wrecks you dive.
Some wrecks you experience.

The Chief Dragon is one of them.

What if this wreck was in the Red Sea?

Would you know its name?
Would it be on your bucket list?
Would divers travel thousands of kilometres specifically to dive it?
Perhaps.
But SS Perseas isn't in the Red Sea.
She lies beneath the Indian Ocean, off Sri Lanka.
A WW1 historic shipwreck that has spent decades being reclaimed by the sea. Today, her structure is covered in marine growth and surrounded by life while remaining largely unknown to the global diving community.
And that raises an interesting question.
How many world-class dives remain relatively unknown simply because they happen to be in the “wrong” destination?
Perhaps Sri Lanka has a few. 😏🇱🇰
Would SS Perseas make your bucket list?

COLOMBO WRECK BELT- 18+ WRECKS. ONE STRETCH OF COASTLINE.

Best suited for Advanced and Deep Certified recreational divers and Tec divers.
12 wrecks in 24-30m
05 wrecks in 30-40m
SS Worcestershire @ 58m

Large steel structures that remain largely intact despite violent ends in most cases. 2 historic wrecks from WW1. Multiple depth ranges. And wrecks that deserve far more than a single dive.
All natural. None purpose-sunk.
Some wrecks should be in the bucket-list of any wreck diver.
Additionally, Sierra is a particularly interesting place for OW training dives : multiple platforms, abundant marine life and plenty of visual reference points with great visibility. Even suitable for DSD.

These wrecks have opened up well and decades, some centuries, underwater have turned many of these wrecks into impressive ecosystems and interesting safe swim throughs.
Nitrox makes sense for many deeper recreational profiles.
Geographically, the wrecks are spread over a long stretch of coastline. A serious wreck-diving programme may require using multiple operators to avoid unnecessarily long boat journeys.
Technical diving is available, but dedicated CCR support remains limited and should be planned in advance.
The main West Coast diving season generally runs from October to April

THE GREAT SRI LANKAN DIVE SWITCH 🌊
As the monsoon changes, the conditions that favour diving gradually move from one side of the island to the other.
The East Coast has delivered another excellent season. Now the focus moves back to the West and South Coasts.
Colombo. Negombo. Galle. Hikkaduwa.

Same high quality diving but different addresses.

So if you're planning a Sri Lanka dive trip, take note. East Coast could be closed for diving by the time you land, especially if your ETA is after 1st October.
