“Looking Like Tendulkar” — BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla Praises Sonal Dinusha

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s emerging batting star Sonal Dinusha has attracted major attention during the ongoing Test series against India, with BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla comparing the 25-year-old left-hander’s style and potential to Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar.

Shukla took to social media on Thursday to praise Dinusha after watching his remarkable run of form against India.

“This Sonal of Srilanka is an amazing player. Looking like Tendulkar. Can be a wonderful Test player in international cricket.”

The post came as Dinusha produced another determined innings in Sri Lanka’s second innings at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo.

🔥 Dinusha’s remarkable series
Dinusha has been one of Sri Lanka's biggest positives in a series where India have dominated large portions of the contest.
The left-hander began the series in Galle with scores of 100 and 84. He then continued his extraordinary consistency in Colombo, scoring 103 in Sri Lanka’s first innings before reaching another half-century in the second innings.

That gave Dinusha four consecutive 50-plus scores in his first four Test innings against India — a remarkable achievement.
He became the first Asian batter to do so and only the fifth player overall, joining an elite group that includes England’s Douglas Jardine and Ken Barrington, and West Indies greats Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott. Barrington had last achieved the feat in 1959.

Dinusha, born in December 2000, is a left-handed batter and left-arm orthodox all-rounder. He made his Test debut for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh in June 2025.

His recent performances suggest that Sri Lanka may have uncovered a player capable of becoming an important part of their Test batting unit.

He has also benefited from long-term coaching. His coach Dulshan, who has worked with Dinusha for 13 years, described him as talented, humble and honest, while noting that his productive sweep shot has been a major weapon during the series.

Comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar naturally create enormous expectations, and Dinusha still has a long way to go before such comparisons can be judged over a career.

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka Fight Back, But Defeat Looms as India Enforce Follow-On in Colombo

Colombo: Sri Lanka showed tremendous resistance on Day 4 of the second Test against India at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC), but the hosts remain in a deeply difficult position heading into the final day.

What began as another potential batting collapse turned into a remarkable fightback, led by young all-rounder Sonal Dinusha, but India ultimately secured a commanding first-innings advantage and enforced the follow-on.

🔥 Dinusha's Second Successive Century
Resuming at 265/8, Sri Lanka needed 39 more runs to avoid the follow-on after India had declared at 503/9.

Sonal Dinusha carried on from his unbeaten 85 overnight and completed a magnificent 103 off 162 balls, registering his second consecutive Test century against India.

His century came after he had already scored 100 and 84 in the first Test in Galle, followed by an unbeaten 52 earlier in Colombo.
Dinusha's latest hundred once again demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure, although it could not prevent Sri Lanka from falling short of India's massive first-innings total.

🇮🇳 India Strike Back
India needed only 15 minutes to take Sri Lanka's final two wickets.
Debutant spinner Saransh Jain claimed the wickets of Lahiru Kumara and Dinusha, with Dinusha becoming the final Sri Lankan batter dismissed.
Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 290, leaving India with a 213-run first-innings lead.
India then made the decision to enforce the follow-on, putting Sri Lanka back into bat immediately.

💪 Sri Lanka Refuse to Surrender
Despite the enormous pressure, Sri Lanka's second innings provided another glimpse of resistance.

Kamil Mishara scored 32, while Pasindu Sooriyabandara continued his excellent contribution with the bat. Kamindu Mendis also provided valuable support.

Sri Lanka reached 229/6 at stumps, giving them an overall lead of only 16 runs after the follow-on.

That means the match is still alive, but Sri Lanka face an enormous challenge on the final day.

Colombo: Sri Lanka's emerging all-rounder Sonal Dinusha is continuing to produce an impressive series against India, following his outstanding performances in Galle with another crucial innings at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
