Regarding Borderlands Nepal

Dear Friends,

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy and sadness to everyone affected by the devastating events that have recently taken place in Nepal.

Thank you to all of you who have reached out to us with messages of concern. We are deeply grateful for your thoughts and kindness.

The original Borderlands is located just south of the Tibet border, on the Bhote Kosi River. Bhote means Tibet, and Kosi means river. We want to clarify that our valley and Borderlands were not affected by this particular disaster. The devastating flash flood occurred on another Bhote Kosi River in a different valley.

However, the tragedy is very close to us in another way.

Our nearest village to Borderlands is Ghati, a community with which Borderlands has shared a close relationship for more than 30 years. Many men from Ghati have worked in the valley where these floods occurred. Tragically, many are now missing.

The loss of these men will have a profound effect on their families and on this small community that has been such an important part of the Borderlands story.

Our hearts go out to their families, to the people of Ghati, and to everyone across Nepal who has been affected by this terrible event.

Nepal sits on the front line of a rapidly changing climate. Its steep mountain valleys, glacial lakes and rivers make many communities particularly vulnerable to sudden and extreme events. What has happened is a heartbreaking reminder of just how quickly conditions can change.

We hope that this tragedy will lead to greater investment in early-warning systems, monitoring and communication, so that communities living downstream can receive enough warning to reach safety when these events occur.

There is also a much bigger question that we cannot ignore.

For decades, scientists have warned that a warming climate would bring more frequent and more extreme weather events. Yet our world continues to pursue rapid growth while remaining heavily dependent on fossil fuels and other systems that place enormous pressure on the environment.

Perhaps what we are witnessing is a glimpse of the new reality we have been warned about for so long.

Even our base in Sri Lanka has experienced two significant floods in the past six months, affecting our operations, our communities and our investments. These events remind us that this is not simply a problem somewhere else. Climate change is already affecting the places where we live and work.

At Borderlands, we have always believed that our connection to the land, the rivers and the communities around us carries a responsibility. We hope that from this terrible tragedy can come greater awareness, better preparation and meaningful action to protect communities in the future.

Our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones, and our thoughts remain with the families waiting for news, the people of Rasuwa , and all those affected across Nepal.

Borderlands just completed its largest program to date at our new base in Weligama on the south coast of the island. After many years of construction the base came to life with over 140 participants for a days training program with a team from Baurs. The program went off without a hitch. The new base colud easlly manage a group larger as we set our sights on an event this summer which we hope will draw over 300 folks to Sri Lanka's lastest south coast venue.

The Borderlands Canoe School prepares students to face challenges through effective communication , teamwork and trust. After this three day session students will paddle independently down the Kelani camping on the river beds, canoeing class two rapids and navigating using maps and compasses.
