TRAINING PROGRAMME ON BASIC WORKSHOP PRACTICE 🔧

Looking to gain hands-on experience with industrial machinery, equipment and basic workshop practices?

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa, is offering a practical training programme designed to introduce participants to essential workshop operations used in the industrial sector.

📌 Course Objective
To provide participants with an introduction to industrial machinery and equipment, together with practical basic training in workshop practices.

👥 Who can apply?

* Students who have completed GCE O/L
* School leavers
* Anyone interested in gaining practical experience with industrial machinery and equipment

📚 Course Content
✅ Safety in industrial/workshop environments
✅ Machining operations and applications – cutting, drilling, shaping and lathe operations
✅ Welding operations and applications
✅ Metal forming operations and applications
✅ Casting operations and applications

🔧 Programme Format: Lectures + practical workshop training
📅 Duration: 8 sessions × 3 hours each, conducted over 2 weeks
🌐 Medium: Sinhala / English
📍 Venue: Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Moratuwa
👥 Batch Size: 30 participants
💰 Course Fee: LKR 30,000 per participant
📅 Commencement: September 2026
⏰ Application Deadline: Before 24 August 2026

🇱🇰🏎️ Falcon E Racing Takes Sri Lankan Innovation to Formula Student Spain 2026

A proud moment for Sri Lanka and the University of Moratuwa! 🇱🇰🎓

Falcon E Racing, the pioneering Formula Student electric racing team of the University of Moratuwa, has departed for Spain to compete at Formula Student Spain 2026, one of the world’s leading student engineering and motorsport competitions.

A team of 32 students and two lecturers will represent Sri Lanka at the iconic Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, taking on university teams from around the world.

What makes this journey even more special is the story behind it.

Since its beginning in 2017, Falcon E Racing has continued to push the boundaries of engineering innovation in Sri Lanka. The team has:

🏆 Qualified among the top teams at Formula Student Germany in 2019
🥈 Secured 2nd place overall at the virtual Formula Student Bharat in 2022
⚡ Unveiled Sri Lanka’s first Formula Student electric race car in 2023
🏁 Finished among the top 10 teams at Formula Bharat 2024
🚗 Introduced its next-generation electric race car, Falcon E2, in 2025

Now, Falcon E Racing is taking the Falcon E2 to Spain to compete on an even bigger international stage.

The team’s journey is supported by Advantis Group as a sponsor, helping these young Sri Lankan engineers take their innovation beyond the borders of Sri Lanka.

Formula Student is about much more than racing. It is where engineering knowledge, creativity, teamwork and determination come together to solve real-world challenges.

A great loss to the Engineering community !

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Emeritus Professor P. A. De Silva (PAD Silva), one of the founding members and former HOD of the DOME.

Prof. PAD Silva was much more than an academic. He was a true engineer, innovator and pioneer who dedicated his life to developing engineering and technical education in Sri Lanka.

Some remarkable contributions from his long career include:

🔹 He played an important role in expanding technical education and helped increase the intake of Junior Technical Officers in the early days of the institution.

🔹 In the 1970s, he led the development of a fully electric, battery-operated car at the University, with more than 95% of its components developed locally. The project also incorporated regenerative braking technology.

🔹 He was involved in developing windmills, gem-cutting machines, and equipment for boiling and drying rice for local use.

🔹 During his time at the Ceylon Steel Corporation, Stage II of the plant was completed, and lathe, drilling and grinding machines were developed locally.

🔹 He was instrumental in establishing the CAD/CAM Centre at the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

🔹 He also served as Chairman of the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute, continuing his contribution to technical education beyond the university.

Perhaps most importantly, he believed Sri Lanka should build and develop its own technology rather than simply import it — a message that remains incredibly relevant today.
