Sesotho Media & Development (SM&D) with support of Commonwealth Foundation continued with the journalism safety workshops with members of the Lesotho Correctional Service(LCS) and journalists. The session built on earlier discussions with the Lesotho Mounted Police Service(LMPS), focusing on journalist safety, accountability and cooperation. Challenges such as barriers to accessing information and risks from citizen journalism were highlighted.

This was followed by a journalists‑only workshop where professionals reviewed concerns raised in both LMPS and LCS sessions, reflecting on ethics, legal protections and support structures. A final workshop with citizen journalists then interrogated all issues discussed, distinguishing roles, addressing misinformation and agreeing on a way forward to ensure safety and credibility as news disseminators.

This sequence reinforced SM&D’s role as a mediator and catalyst for press freedom, ensuring that both professional and citizen journalists are empowered to operate safely and responsibly.

With the support to Lesotho from the Commonwealth Foundation, today we hosted a one‑day safety and risk assessment workshop for Experienced journalists and the Lesotho Mounted Police Service(LMPS). This engagement took place at the Police Training College (PTC), and forms part of an extensive Study commissioned by SM&D’s in November 2025.

The workshop aimed to create a practical safe-space for dialogue where journalists and the LMPS can engage directly on issues of safety, protection mechanisms, legal protections and gaps, access to redress, accountability, and cooperation. Discussions highlighted challenges that often cause misalignment, in some instances a culture intimidation, fear, harassment and violence between the two sectors, disrupting press freedom and consequently harming the country’s democracy.

Key challenges identified included:
- Media visibility in volatile risky reporting environment,
Ethical, accountable and responsible journalism within confines of the law.
- Barriers to accessing information for public interest.
- Unclear complaints and reporting structures, and amongst others.
- The risks associated with the rise of unregulated citizen journalism.

Recommendations from the workshop included:
- Building public awareness on identifying professional vs citizen journalism and information.
- Promoting stronger working relations through regular Press Clubs with different media partners, and amongst others.
- Improving access to information to ensure journalists reference accurate and reliable sources.

Sesotho Media & Development would like to extend a special thanks to all participants and the cooperation from partners LMPS and MISA Lesotho. Stay tuned as we proceed with Media and Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS) on Tuesday 21 July 2026, at the Resource Centre at Sesotho Media and Development Offices.

Cheers to the Uncles, Grandparents, Brothers and Fathers who step up to play a fatherhood role not only for the children they birthed but for every child who needs a father figure. Because true fatherhood is not defined by biology but by the courage to nurture, protect and lead with love.
