'All this hating in the world is wrong. Forget about nations. Forget about colour. Forget about different religions. People are people, God created us all. The only thing that makes one man better than another is the goodness of his deeds in the eyes of God.'

- Muhammad Ali

They were supposed to be unstoppable warriors — men who fought with such savage intensity that enemies believed they couldn't be killed. Viking berserkers entered battle in a trance-like fury, their bodies seemingly immune to pain, their weapons moving with terrifying precision. But here's where the story takes a turn: the very thing that made them legendary eventually made them liabilities.

As Viking society matured and raids gave way to settlements and trade, berserkers became a problem. Their rage didn't turn off when battle ended. They destroyed villages they were meant to protect. They killed allies as easily as enemies. By the 11th century, even the Vikings had seen enough. Kings began banning them, and the berserker tradition faded into legend.

What we're left with is a reminder that raw power without restraint doesn't build civilizations — it tears them apart.

A Roman emperor sat alone with a notebook, wrestling with the same questions that plague us today. How do you stay decent when the world isn't? How do you forgive when you have every right to rage? Marcus Aurelius didn't write Meditations for publication. He wrote it for himself, a private conversation with his own conscience during the darkest years of his reign.

What he discovered changed how we think about strength. True power, he realized, wasn't about controlling others or crushing your enemies. It was about mastering yourself. Wealth fades. Status crumbles. Even your body betrays you eventually. But your choice to remain compassionate when someone wrongs you? Your decision to stay principled when no one would know if you didn't? That's real.

Aurelius understood something profound: you cannot always control what happens to you, but you own your response. A man can insult you, disappoint you, betray you. He cannot make you bitter unless you let him. That's not weakness. That's the hardest kind of strength there is, and it's why a Roman emperor's private journal still speaks to us nearly two thousand years later.

Most people treat a tap like a loss. They treat it as proof that they're not good enough. But, that's the wrong way to see it, anc it's one of the biggest reasons a lot of Jiu-Jitsu practitioners - hobyists and competitors alike - stall out in their progress.
Tapping is the fastest feedback loop in our sport! As, the moment you tap, you have an opportunity to notice and learn from exactly what went wrong, such as a weak grip, an improperly utilized frame, a setup you didn't see coming....No drill gives you that information as clearly or as fast as one live round does.
Refusing the tap just delays the lesson. As muscling out of bad positions or avoiding rounds you might lose protects your ego for a day, but you're not getting the information - you're just delaying the moment you can find and understand your gaps in knowledge, usually until it costs you more.
The people who improve fastest usually (and much more often than not) aren't the ones avoiding the tap, but they're the ones using every round to learn something instead of protecting a result that doesn't matter outside that roll. Because (and remember): competition is for winning, but training is for learning and improving!
Tap smart. In other words, fight for the position, fight for the escape, make them work for it. But once you're caught, tap, reset, and ask (yourself and your training partner) what happened. As you're not there to protect your pride, but you're there to get better, and tapping is one of the fastest ways to do that.
