The message below is from our founding member Patrick Floener. We love you Patrick! 💙🌳

"Happy second birthday, My Skydiving Footprint! 🎁🎉

Exactly two years ago I registered the domain and launched the site after discussions about our footprint as skydivers emerged on social media. It took some thorough research and lots of messages and e-mails to put all of it together and I couldn't have done it without the help of many great people in our community happily providing me with data: dropzones, tunnels, pilots, event organizers, and others.

We are pursuing a highly polluting activity as our sport. This goes for outdoor as well as indoor skydiving. While we might not want to quit this sport we love so much just yet, there are some things we can do, such as choosing which aircraft we skydive from, visiting dropzones closer to where we live, or compensating the emissions of our activities (all the while remaining aware that this does not undo the damage). The main purpose of My Skydiving Footprint was to raise awareness and provide actual numbers rather than using vague terms such as "less" or "more". And boy, what a trip it has been. In the past two years, quite a few event organizers have chosen to compensate all of their emissions, calculating them using My Skydiving Footprint, while others use it as a tool to promote cleaner flying and building a path towards a more sustainable future. In this context I'd especially like to thank Jasper and Alex, whom I've talked to a lot about this project and who both helped me to improve it and make it the tool it is today. Another heartfelt thank you goes to many other people who reached out with suggestions, questions, or simply to express their appreciation of this project. That is what keeps me going.

Many things happened in the past two years. The first flight of a fully electrical C208B took place this year, the exact plane which already now is very popular for skydiving (and also the cleanest even when run on fossil fuels). Tunnels switched to entirely renewable energy. Skydivers pledged to plant trees, fly less, or compensate their emissions. Permitting myself to use vague terms rather than numbers, it feels like more people are aware about our impact today than two years ago. And that's great. While there's still a long way to go, it's a start. And I'm proud to be part of this amazing community.

As a birthday gift to My Skydiving Footprint I planted 100€ worth of trees through trees.org 🌳"
