Zip ties in front are the starting point — not the final scenario.

At Delta Survival School, restraint escape is taught progressively: basic positions first, then increasingly difficult configurations, limitations and stress.

This is Level 1: understanding the principle of friction, movement and problem-solving under restraint.

Learn the principle. Build the skill. Then increase the difficulty.

There is no perfect answer to a knife attack.

This is simply one defensive option for one specific situation.

Train different scenarios. Understand the principles. Adapt when it matters.

The attack often starts before the first physical contact.

Intimidation, shouting, pressure and aggression are often used to overwhelm you and take control of the situation.

You cannot train for that after it happens.

Stress exposure starts before the threat. Train the mind to keep functioning under pressure.

Getting away from a static knife threat can be easier than you think — but only if you understand what you’re dealing with.

Of course, you may get cut. Of course, you need training. Of course, you need the right mindset.

But a static threat is not the same as an active stabbing attack. The dynamics are different, the decisions are different, and your response has to reflect that.

The objective is not to perform a perfect technique. It is to recognize the opportunity, create control, create distance, and get out.

Training gives you options. Mindset helps you use them under pressure.

This wasn’t about demonstrating a technique.

It was about testing myself under pressure.

Hands restrained behind my back. Legs restrained. Vision removed. Limited movement, discomfort, uncertainty, and no visual reference.

The objective was simple: create enough stress to see how well I could stay calm, think, adapt, and keep working toward a solution.

Knowing what to do in a comfortable environment is one thing. Being able to function when your senses are limited, your body is restricted, and frustration starts building is something completely different.

Sometimes the test isn’t the technique.

The test is whether you can still think when everything becomes uncomfortable.

Don’t jump into the middle of a fight.

You may be trying to help, but one uncontrolled punch can change everything.

Escaping zip ties with your hands restrained behind your back is a completely different problem.

Limited visibility. Restricted movement. Difficult access. Awkward body positioning. And significantly less control over what you’re doing.

That’s exactly why restraint-escape training has to include different positions, limitations and circumstances.

Here, I’m demonstrating the shoelace friction method with the hands restrained behind the back.

Is it fast? Not necessarily.

And it doesn’t have to be.

The important question is not simply “How fast can I get out?”

It is whether you have the knowledge, opportunity and ability to create an escape when circumstances allow it.

This technique will not fit every situation. Nothing will.

It is one tool, for one specific problem, within a much broader restraint-escape framework.

The objective is not to learn a trick.

The objective is to build options.

Tour du Mont Blanc.

Days on the trail, moving through three countries and some of the most impressive landscapes in the Alps.

Long climbs, changing weather, tired legs, simple camps and the kind of views that make you stop for a moment and just take it all in.

Some experiences don’t need much explanation. They just need to be lived.
