The future of Kyokushin Karate as an Olympic sport is uncertain, as the discipline has yet to be officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, there is a growing movement within the Kyokushin community to have the sport recognized and included in the Olympics.
Kyokushin Karate, also known as the "Ultimate Truth" style, is a full contact, stand-up striking martial art that originated in Japan in the 1960s. The sport is known for its strong emphasis on full-contact sparring, as well as its strict code of conduct and discipline.
The push to have Kyokushin Karate recognized as an Olympic sport began in the 1990s, when the World Union of Karate-Do Organizations (WUKO) submitted a proposal to the IOC for the inclusion of full-contact karate in the Olympics. However, the proposal was ultimately rejected due to concerns about the safety of full-contact sparring.
In recent years, the push for Olympic recognition has gained momentum within the Kyokushin community. The International Kyokushin Karate Organization (IKO) has been actively working to have the sport recognized as an Olympic discipline, and has even proposed a modified version of the sport that would be safer and more suitable for the Olympic Games.
The proposed version of Kyokushin Karate for the Olympics would feature a points system, where strikes to the head and body would be worth different points, and matches would be decided based on the number of points scored. This would make the sport more suitable for the Olympic format, while still maintaining the core principles of Kyokushin Karate.
Despite the growing support for Olympic recognition, there is no guarantee that Kyokushin Karate will be included in the Olympics in the near future. The process of getting a sport recognized by the IOC is a long and difficult one, and there are many other sports vying for inclusion in the Games.
In summary, while the future of Kyokushin Karate as an Olympic sport remains uncertain, there is a growing movement within the community to have the discipline recognized and included in the Games. The International Kyokushin Karate Organization has proposed a modified version of the sport that would be safer and more suitable for the Olympic format, and is actively working to have the sport recognized by the International Olympic Committee.
