The day my daughter met her narcissist
It all began with a wedding she did not want to go to. A dress she did not want to wear, a friend and classmate that wanted her to be a bridesmaid.
Luna was the same age as my daughter Stella ,but Luna did not have many friends at university as she always came across as being superior to others and knew everything better. Stella is a very nice person and overlooks the ugly side of people and always manages to find something nice in everyone. So she befriended her and tried to introduce her to other classmates which was not always easy.
Luna had a boyfriend who was hardworking and honest and worshipped her , but he did not meet the requirements and standards of her parents,so the golden rule applied after graduation. Whoever has the gold makes the rules.
Luna created her company with the help of her parents and moved away. She stayed in contact with my daughter Stella ,giving her up to date infos on her new relationship. A man 10 years older who still had to find himself. Whose first anniversary gift was a pair of house shoes to her and was waiting for his dinner after. Luna was content, her parents approved,and did not mind contributing to the futur happy couple in a very generous way.
The wedding date approached,all organised by Luna in a grand expensive way. Stella tried to organize a pre wedding girls night, but that was never good enough and at the end all the ideas were shot down. Stella took off work for the 3 day event. Stella did not want to go as it all seemed so over the top but she felt sad for her friend and did what she had to do. Prepare a speech , smile and show how happy she is for her.
Luna sent her the bridesmaid dress 2 days before the wedding. A size so small that Barbie would have had problems getting into it. We found a kind and understanding seamstress who worked wonders on the dress, so that my daughter looked elegant and sexy. Not the frumpy old maid look that it was at first.
Luna realised, the closer the wedding day came that she had no one to invite. Her futur husband invited all his buddies as Luna’s parents were footing the bill.
This fateful day of the wedding was the beginning of a love story where the end no one saw coming.
The day after the wedding my daughter had shiny eyes and was all pink in the cheeks. She was so happy. She had danced until the little hours of the morning and had a great time chatting and laughing. No regrets for having gone to the wedding.
The following days she was so happy, laughing putting extra care into her appearance,looking beautiful and glamourous A couple of days later it was her Birthday and she asked if she can bring someone. Well yes, no problem,this is the first time that she asked to bring someone. For her Birthday we decided to have pre dinner drinks in the restaurant bar, and then move on to our table for some delicious sushi.
Stella is already sitting in the bar area of the restaurant, she is glowing with happiness.I arrive and a blond wavy haired , round faced, thin lipped 1.95 tall slightly out of shape young man stands up . He introduces himself as Boyd , My first impression is very positive as I could understand why she was so happy. Excellent manners, easy to talk to, worldly with travel anecdotes. When my daughter said something he looked at her with sheer awe and outright infatuation.

Describing himself as a trader and family fund manager showed that he had ambition and had motivation to work and make something out of himself. I was so happy for my daughter, she told me that he is the one, he makes her happy and they can talk about everything and anything. He made her laugh , he made her smile . What does a mom want more for the lovely daughter that she has.
The romance continued to blossom, she went to work and he flew off for his work. Weekends were spent together whenever possible.
Christmas time was just around the corner as his family did not care about Christmas or family time , according to Boyd, he wanted to know if we minded that they both go away for their first Christmas together. To make memories for the future. So,Christmas they went off skiing in 5 stars resorts which he had organised.New Year was spent in in the best Hotel on the south coast of France.Although we are a very close knitted family ,we were all happy for her to go and be with the love of her life. They have to fly the coop at some point and we were so happy that she found the One.
My daughter runs her own company , she is successful and very dedicated to her work but she made time for the relationship to blossom. She took time off to travel with him.These travels were always organized as a surprise for her. Which yes, is romantic. He had lots of time on his hands which was surprising as he managed to fly to meet her quite often a month and spent his time in 5 star hotels waiting until she was done with work.
Three month into the relationship and a whirlwind courtship, he asked for my daughters hand with great pomp and circumstance. We were surprised but the couple was in love, good age for marriage and family. This was a real romance out of a harlequin romance book.
Venice,special date,with room number matching the date. The dinner and then the ring. My daughter was over the moon,she could not believe how lucky she was to be charmed and loved by this man.
The day she got engaged he started to come on weekends and stay at her apartment, which is owned by me. He walked her to work and went back to the apartment and waited for her until she was done with her 12 hour shift. At first I thought okay ,he is figuring things out , as he is still living with his mother and needs time to sort things out to make sure that she is going to be fine without him, while also making a plan for a future with Stella as they live in different countries.Meanwhile weeks have gone by, and still no plans were forthcoming, although Stella had proposed to take time off to find an apartment in which they could do live together. He was still saying he was a trader, so that job can be done anywhere really.

When nothing was moving forward and Stella started to get fed up with the procrastination, there was a sudden change in plans. Boyd announced that his 2 bachelor degrees and 2 masters degrees were not enough to find work….
He needed to go back to Unversity and then he will get a fantastic job. We were quite thrown at this, as suddenly from a trader to becoming a student in his middle thirties with no real job, just living off his mom and not really being anything else was concerning.
Stella did not know anymore what to think, he began to call and facetime while she was at work. He told her she was distant, that she was cheating on him. Then he did not call her. As she thought that he was busy she did not want to disturb him. This made him angry, and he told her that he was testing her.
When this did not work the way he wanted, he sent her flowers, love poems.
He applied to the Universities and no surprise was taken. These Universities cost a fortune and are normally paid for by the companies that send their executives. Boyd paid out of his own pocket attended 2 classes and knew everything better than the professor. Boyd quit university and was once again without a goal.

He was demanding to set a date for the wedding, but Stella suddenly realised that her feelings were changing for Boyd. His controlling over face time, his sudden appearances at her work place were getting too much. He began to criticize her friends, then her. Boyd made comments about her weight, her hair, her teeth. The way she dressed and the friends she had. It was not done overtly but with little nasty comments. He bought airline tickets without asking her if it is convenient for him to come ,as she was working on a new job and had no time. He just wanted to stay in the apartment and wait for her.His possessive attitude was more and more difficult.When she did not pick up her phone,he would call 20 times. Every time FaceTime, to control where she was. Playing games of not calling to test her. Sending flowers in apology .When she did not run after him he began shouting at her over the phone and hanging up on her.
Stella tried very hard to make it work and gave into his controlling behavior.
So one day, I as the mother had enough. I was not willing to finance a guy and pay for his housing to sleep and patronize my daughter. I put my foot down and said that he cannot stay at the appartment anymore. He needs to get his act together and decide where they will make their own home. This caused a major discussion between him and her, as he did not see why he could not stay there anymore, but he did not have the guts to call me and ask me outright. Narcissists are cowards and insecure, they go for the sweet and nice. Shows you what I am. She hated his phone calls. So one evening she said she could not take the video call anymore. I took the phone and answered it. His face was one for the books..I just said that my daughter forgot her phone and surely it does not really matter. He was stuttering as I threw him off his line. He said it was no problem. Ha, 5 minutes a text came if I could bring her the phone. I ignored this.
His jealousy and possessiveness escalated. As he could not stay anymore in the apartment he begrudgingly stayed in a 5 star Hotel. Stella did not spend the night there at first. Already she was not g-feeling very well and stomach was constantly upset. Th second night her friend Luna was there and had asked her if they could go on a double date .She and her husband and Stella with Boyd.
This dinner was the end for a lot of things. Boyd argued with the waiter and treated him badly, Luna was saying that Boyd should not argue about the bill as it was not him paying but her. It all escalated that night. Stella went back to the hotel with Boyd. She wanted to break it off, but I told her that he could turn nasty and with his 110 kg he could hurt her, before the police could come. She was not feeling well and told him that she is not feeling good. Boyd got annoyed and called her a hypochondriac.

Just this word, is all it took to open her eyes and see what Boyd really was. Then she fell ill with the stress of his jealousy and possessiveness. She grew an ulcer in the colon and he said that she was exaggerating..
He accused her of having an affair, of being distant lying to him He wanted control again, booking holidays without asking her if this was fine for her.
Stella was not sure what was wrong with him and began looking at Doctor Google. First she thought he had the eternal student syndrome. But then she realized that it could be more.
She began learning about narcissism, the evolution of the relationship between a narcissist and a non narcissistic person. About the love bombing, the controlling of the other person in every aspect by making them insecure about themselves. More importantly the attention and adoration they need from the partner. The more Stella read the clearer it became to her that she needs to find the fastest exit to this beginning of a lifetime nightmare. She told him to leave her alone and take a break. So he broke the relationship off in the mind of her running back to him. When she did not do so, she read about the “no contact” in the hope he would leave her alone forever if she does not respond. Suddenly she received messages from her friends that she needs to get back together, that he is a poor guy in love. These messages were hurtful as she thought that her friends would understand a decision she has taken. With a heavy heart she ignored the messages ,they remained unread. All these messages were ignored as a no contact is also extended to those whom he speaks to and lies to, to make himself look like the victim.
Due to all this mental stress and strain my daughter became very ill,she needed medical attention.
One evening soon after, I see him opposite my building waiting. I leave the house but as I had an umbrella and a long coat he did not recognise me, but I recognised him. A few nights later I leave the house again and he charges across the street . He wanted to tell me his side of the story. I do what any mother would do and tell him that there is no story to tell, to leave her alone and anyone in the family, and that I was not interested what he has to say. He should be ashamed of himself. Sadly this was not the end.
My daughter was hospitalised as she was so shaken with the experience that her ulcer expanded in her entire large intestine which caused major bleeding and anemia. She was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis Pancolitis.
After a week on strong medication given intravenously and loss of 6 kilos she came home. Feeling a little stronger mentally. His messages continued to come, his poems,his love declarations.. 52 pages of whats apps within 3 weeks. It was unbearable. Stella has a new phone number and email. She has removed herself from social media;
From one of her last good friends who had gone thru a similar experience she was warned that he would arrive in a few days to catch her and talk to her. Stella did not want to go anywhere alone anymore ,she was scared that he might hurt her physically. The same day we had lunch with a friend and then walked on a famous street in front of a casino and 5star hotel . He had arrived early and as life goes he walked right towards us. First he did not register it was my daughter and myself. I told her to walk on and not turn around.He started calling loudly and walking briskly behind us and then began running down the street shouting .
We live in one of the safest places in the world. Across the street was a police station, we went across and he came running behind us. Once inside the station Stella explained the situation, that her ex fiancé was harassing her and did not want to leave her alone. Boyd was determined, he started banging on the police stations door. When we left the station, the officers detained him and asked for his details. My daughter filed a formal complaint. He was detained and his identification was taken. Even this has not deterred him. He texted an hour later that he wants a last meeting.
You can rest assured that this is never going to happen. He is a psychopath whose mental stability is non existent.I pity his next victim. When my daughter tells her story she realises that many of her friends have had this happen to them. She has been on forums and realised that he is a narcissist just like out of textbook.
She knows now that she has been one of the lucky ones,that has escaped from the hands and mind of a psychopath.
I wish it would not be a true story but sadly it is.
We are now 4 month after and he has contacted again, emails WhatsApp from all sorts of different numbers on her work phone, old email adresses. He wants to meet her, threats with … if she does not reply. He tries to intimidate, to scare her. She has finally started to recover and he is again trying to ruin this. The man is a psycho, a weirdo. As he is not normal he would get away with murder. My daughter has a good support system around her, I feel for his mom and his half brother who most likely endure the strains and tempers of his illness or have given up and just live a life of enduring the tempers and lies.
I just hope that anyone man or woman, who goes thru life living with a narcissist manages one day to leave and find peace.
