The History of Rafting on the Tara River
– From Prehistory to Modern Adventure
* Prehistoric Roots – Life Along the Canyon
Long before rafting became an adventure sport, the Tara River Canyon was a lifeline for early human communities.
Archaeological findings and cave drawings discovered in the Tara & Piva region show that prehistoric people lived along these steep limestone cliffs thousands of years ago.
The river was not an attraction — it was survival. It provided fresh water, fish, transport, and natural protection. Caves above the canyon served as shelters and strategic lookout points. Even then, the Tara was powerful, untamed, and respected.
Although there is no record of “rafting” as we know it today, wooden river craft were used for the transport of goods and communication between settlements
( from the Durmitor Mountains to the Danube River )
The river was already recognised as a force that demanded knowledge, skill, and courage.
---
* The Era of the “Triftari”
– Timber Rafting and Hard River Life
Centuries later, rafting on the Tara developed not as a sport, but as hard physical labour.
The men known as “triftari” were timber rafters. Their job was to transport massive logs from the forests of Durmitor down the canyon toward the Drina, Sava and Danube. They built large wooden rafts, "splav" from dried logs and navigated them through powerful rapids.
Unlike modern inflatable rafts, traditional wooden rafts on the Tara River were faster in strong currents because of their massive weight. They did not require paddling. Steering required two experienced men using large wooden rudders — one positioned at the front and one at the back — while passengers sat on benches in the centre of the raft.
One of the most dangerous sections was Brstanovica 4 km rapids and Uzlup - the former river barrier, a temporary log dam that was constructed to control timber flow. When released, huge quantities of wood and water rushed downstream. Timing and river knowledge were everything.
Life of a triftar was brutal...

How to Choose the Perfect Rafting Trip:
A Buyer’s Guide for Tara Canyon Rafting
Not all experiences in the canyon are created equal.
To ensure you get the best value, safety, and scenery in the Tara Canyon, here is exactly what you need to look for before hitting the "Book Now" button.
1. Choose the Right Section of the River
The Tara River stretches for 146 km, but the experience changes drastically depending on where you put your boat in the water.
*The "Adrenaline" Run (Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje):
This is the most popular section of the river,
The best part for rafting!
22 of Tara's most exciting rapids (bukovi), including iconic stops like the seasonal Manita Vrela waterfall for swimming and the river bar Triftar for a refresh.
*The "Full Canyon" Experience:
A multi-day expedition (typically 1-2 or 3 days, depending on water levels ) starting from Splavište. This is the only way to see the Đurđevića Tara Bridge from a river-level perspective and visit the famous Bailovića Sige and Jovičića cascades in the protected "Roadless Area."
*The Deepest Part of Canyon (Tepca Village Start Point):
Starting from Tepca Village allows you to navigate the deepest part of Tara Canyon, visit the magnificent Bailovića Sige waterfall and many other locations until you reach the end of the Tara River at Šćepan Polje.
2. Timing is Everything:
Seasonal Water Levels & Rapids and Days of the Week
The intensity of the "Tear of Europe" fluctuates every month:
April – May:
High water levels. This is for extreme adrenaline seekers as the rapids are at their strongest. The most extreme part is the starting point, Brštanovica and the first 4 kilometres.
Many rafting organisers totally avoid the first 4 kilometres from Brštanovica (the best part for rafting ) until water levels are lower ( keep that in mind if you are looking for an adrenaline springtime rafting)
July – August:
Peak of the season!
Perfect for families and recreational rafters. The water is turquoise and

Why should you listen to your guide?
Especially the first four kilometers after the Brštanovica start point!
Brstanovica is the most popular starting point for a one-day rafting on the Tara River. Technically, the most demanding.
Most rafting organisers advertise the Brštanovica route as 18–24 km. 👎
However, the real navigable distance from Brstanovica to Šćepan Polje ( where the Tara River ends )
— measured multiple times by GPS during our professional runs — is close to 14 kilometers.
This is the real river distance all guests actually paddle on Tara. Since Brstanovica road ends there, there is no road up the river canyon from Brštanovica
To enter the river more upstream, it is possible in the Tepca village
( Radovan Luka )
or next to Ðurđevića Tara Bridge
( about 3h drive from Brštanovica for both locations )
---
Access to Brstanovica
Brstanovica can be reached from both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, as the Tara River itself forms the natural border between the two countries.
This is where the real Tara rafting experience begins.

First 10–15 Minutes:
Training on the Water ( paddling drills )
Soon after departure, after a few hundred meters, we enter Brstanovački Buk — the first rapid.
The first 10–15 minutes are not just adrenaline. Clients are receiving practical training under real river conditions.
Here we:
Practice paddle coordination
Test team reaction time
Observe group behavior
Evaluate balance and positioning
Depending on how the crew performs in the first rapid, the skipper may reorganise seating positions inside the raft. And correct paddling reaction, before 1st real rapid - Borovi
( Borovi means pine trees 🌲 🌲 🌲 )
---
After Brstanovački Buk – A Short Calm Before the Serious Section
After the first rapid, the river becomes calm for more than one kilometer. Perfect for synchronised paddling practice before serious rapids.
This calm stretch ends at a right river bend — and that is where Borovi Rapids begins...

The Magnificent Waterfalls of the Tara River Canyon
Manita Vrela (Crazy Springs):
The most photographed waterfall in the canyon
( it is in the middle of your one-day rafting trip )
It is breathtakingly beautiful during the snowmelt in May and June, but it typically "goes crazy" and dries up completely in July
Bailovića Sige Waterfall & Cave:
Widely considered the most beautiful place in the canyon, a natural jewel of the Tara River, this is a massive travertine (tufa) waterfall.
Jovičića Sige Waterfall:
Similar to Bailovića Sige, this is a delicate tufa waterfall located in the upper section of the gorge.
The Mighty Ljutica River, Ljutica - Angry
Located near the Đurđevića Tara Bridge. It is the 11th shortest river in the World
Crna Vrela (Black Springs):
These powerful karst springs emerge from the dark, shaded limestone crevices of the deep canyon.
Urva Waterfalls:
Found near the confluence of the Urva River and the Tara, these falls are characterised by their rugged, wild appearance.
Ivanova Korita Waterfall:
A serene and picturesque fall named after the legendary "Ivan - Deba" local river bar host
Mlinski Potok (Mill Stream) & Waterfall:
The waterfall is hidden within a dense, ancient forest
Šipčanica Waterfalls:
this is a vertical staircase of cascades.
Bijela Vrela (White Springs):
These springs burst directly out of the cliffs in the deep part of the Tara Canyon.
Dobra Voda (Good Water):
This is a series of small, pristine cascades located in the heart of the "Roadless Area."
Lodani Waterfall hiden 2 km upstream from Brstanovica
Seasonal Peaks
To see Manita Vrela and the high-cliff falls at their most impressive, plan your visit for late April, May or June.
Rafting Access: a 2-day rafting trip from Splavište to Šćepan Polje covers the entire waterfall "trail."

Brštanovica
Brštanovica is the most popular starting point for one-day rafting on the Tara River — and also the most technically demanding.
That is exactly why the first few kilometres matter the most.
Many rafting organisers promote the Brštanovica route as 18–24 km, but the actual navigable river distance from Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje — measured during our professional GPS runs — is closer to 14 kilometres.
This is the real section that guests paddle, because the road ends at Brštanovica, and there is no road access farther upstream through this part of the canyon.
If you want to enter the river farther upstream, that is only possible from locations such as Tepca Village (Radovan Luka) or near Đurđevića Tara Bridge.
Both of these access points require a much longer transfer, usually around three hours of driving from Brštanovica.
Access to Brštanovica
Brštanovica can be reached from both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, because the Tara River itself forms the natural border between the two countries.
For many guests, this is where the real Tara rafting experience begins.
The First 10–15 Minutes
The first part of the trip is not only about adrenaline.
It is also the moment when guests receive practical training in real river conditions.
Soon after departure, after only a few hundred metres, the raft enters Brštanovački Buk — the first rapid.
Here, the skipper begins to evaluate how the team functions on the water.
During this opening section, we:
Practice paddle coordination
Test team reaction time
Observe group behaviour
Evaluate balance and seating position
Depending on how the crew performs in the first rapid, the skipper may reorganise positions inside the raft and correct paddling technique before reaching the first truly serious rapid — Borovi.
Calm Before Borovi
After Brštanovački Buk, the river becomes calmer for more than one kilometre.
This stretch is ideal for synchronised paddling practice and preparing the crew for what comes next.
