Building the serve one step at a time 🎾

Throw ➡️ Toss & throw ➡️ Toss & hit

Keeping it simple and helping young players develop the right rhythm from the start.

Working on moving forward and taking control of the point. 🔥

It’s important to expose kids to all tennis situations and shots from an early age, helping them become complete players who can solve problems anywhere on the court.

Some epic rallies and great effort throughout the session! 💪

Some points from a practice match.
Working on being more aggressive, coming to the net, and using serve and volley whenever I get the chance. 🎾

1. The serve is a throwing motion.
Think about throwing a ball upward. That same feeling helps create a smooth swing and effortless power.
Practice throwing drills, they make a big difference.

2. Keep your left arm up after the toss.
Dropping the left arm too early causes the shoulder to drop and the body to collapse. This usually sends the ball into the net.

3. Think “energy up into the ball,”
This helps you extend fully and reach a higher contact point. A higher contact point means better control and more power.

4. Focus on loading the right leg and exploding upward.
Use your legs to drive into the ball. Power in the serve starts from the ground up.

5. Watch the contact point. Don’t turn your head too early.
Turning the head early drops the shoulders and breaks your balance. That often leads to serves going into the net.

6. Think of the serve as rhythm: 1 – 2 – 3.
1 — Start slow and smooth
2 — Toss and load
3 — Explode up into the ball

7. Building a good serve gives you confidence that carries into matches.
When you trust your serve, you start points stronger and play more relaxed under pressure

Lately I’ve been working a lot on my kick serve and experimenting with the toss height and placement. Small adjustments can make a big difference when you want that heavy bounce.

A few key things that help create a strong kick serve:

1️⃣ Toss slightly to the left and above your head
2️⃣ Turn your shoulders fully
3️⃣ Brush the ball from left to right with the racket path
4️⃣ Stay sideways through contact – opening the body too early often turns the serve into a slice

The goal is to create spin, height, and a nasty bounce that pushes the opponent back. 🎾

What about you — do you focus more on toss placement or racket path when working on your kick serve?

Highlights from a rainy session where the footing was sketchy but the forehand was on point. 🎯

In this video, I’m doing an in depth breakdown of player’s serve looking at what the player is already doing well and what can be improved to take the serve to the next level.

The serve is one of the most complex shots in tennis, and small details in rhythm, timing, and body position make a huge difference.

I always encourage players to record themselves, it’s one of the fastest ways to become aware of what’s really happening and to improve with intention.

Kick serve basics don’t need a court 🎾
Using the wall to teach brushing up, rhythm, and confidence on the serve.
