Played on a rice paddy during the dry season with goals made of bamboosticks and fishing nets, the tournament pitch did not resemble anything seen in most football matches. Likewise, the tournament rule that players could not wear shoes did nothing to reduce the intensity and determination of the participants.
This is the first time an amateur football tournament with a major cup award was held in the region, and twenty-four teams from twenty-one different villages participated. Nat Kan Pyin and Lat Paing Kaing co-hosted the tournament and villagers housed and supported the players while they competed. To participate in the tournament, teams travelled to the venue by foot and boat…the longest journey taking three hours by boat.
The tournament featured single-elimination competition and the opening game highlighted a match between hosts Nat Kan Pyin and Lat Paing Kaing. The final, held on the 25th of March pitted two teams, Te Nan Pyin “A” and Te Nan Pyin “B” from Te Nan Pyin village against each other. In a close match that could have resulted in a victory for either side, Team “A” won by a 1-0 margin.
