Q - Can I enter the class at any time?
A - No, please be on the mat before the class starts. Please see the timetable.
Q - Can I practice in sportswear?
A - No, only a white keiko-gi is acceptable.
Q - Can I enter the dojo at any time?
A - You may enter the dojo 30 minutes before the class starts including the time to get dressed and warm-up and can stay
in the dojo for 30 minutes after the class for cooling down.
Q - Can I wear a hakama?
A - The following people wear hakama at Hombu Dojo:
· All Yudansha (persons with black-belts) registered with Aikikai. Women with 3rd kyu or higher.
Q - Can I drink water during practice?
A - Drinking water during class is allowed.
Please take note of the following: Instructors will have water breaks in the summer. In other times, if you need water, ask your partner's permission. Drink while sitting in seiza, facing the wall. Leave water bottles at the back of the dojo.
Q - Where can I fold my hakama?
A - Fold your hakama in the dojo after practice.
Do not sit with your back to shomen while doing this.
Q - Can I wear accessories during practice?
A - No. All accessories, including wedding rings, must be removed before practicing.
Q - What happens if class starts and I have no partner?
A - Please ask to join a nearby person or group by sitting in seiza and saying "onegaishimasu" to them.
Q - Can I participate in clean up after practice?
A - Yes, practitioners are expected to join in the clean-up.
Q - What other manners do I need to know?
A - . Sit in seiza while the instructor is teaching. Wait until the instruction is finished to drink water, fix your Face the wall to do these things.
Q - Can I keep my fingernails long?
A - No. Fingernails should be kept short and clean.
Q - How should I sit during kengaku (observing a class)?
A - Sit in seiza or cross-legged while watching practice. You may also have your knees to the side.
Do not lean on your hands or the wall.
Do not stand while the class is in session.
Q - Can I leave during the class(observing a class)?
A - Yes, you can, but please avoid frequent coming and going which might interfere with the practice.
Q - Can I take photos or videos during kengaku?
A - No. You may not take videos or pictures during classes.
