Why hesitation is dangerous

The clinch – and how to spot it early

Defending pushes (don't fall back)

Escaping grabs & tight contact

One workshop builds awareness. Repetition builds reliable reactions.

You learn the messy middle between "stop" and running.

Two quick strategies:

Hands up first , if their hands come toward you, yours go up into guard.

Rotate, don't pull , for wrist grabs, turn toward their thumb to break free.

This morning is our **5th StandSafe Malta Women’s Self-Defence Class**, and this week we move from **setting boundaries to taking physical action**.

One of the most important skills in self-defence is knowing **when talking is enough… and when it’s time to act**.

In today’s class we will work on:
• Recognising danger early
• Managing distance from a potential threat
• Using strong verbal boundaries
• And learning when and how to transition from talking to physical defence

Self-defence isn’t about fighting. It’s about **awareness, confidence, and having the ability to protect yourself if you ever need to**.

At StandSafe Malta we focus on **realistic situations**, simple techniques, and building the mindset that helps women stay safe in everyday life. Training includes awareness, prevention, risk reduction and practical skills that don’t rely on strength or size.

A little about me for those who are new here:
I’ve dedicated many years to martial arts and teaching. My goal has always been to help people grow stronger, more confident, and more capable. Through StandSafe Malta, I’m especially passionate about helping women realise their own strength and learn practical ways to protect themselves.

You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to be fit.
You just need the willingness to learn.

Because confidence is something that can be trained.

Today we hold our fourth Stand Safe Malta women’s self-defence class, and I’m really looking forward to teaching it.

Today’s focus is striking with purpose.

In this class, we don’t talk about aggression. We talk about striking as a tool , a means to create space, break contact, and escape safely. Every strike has intent, control, and a clear objective: your safety.

Self-defence isn’t about fighting or proving strength. It’s about understanding when and how to act decisively, then getting out of danger as quickly as possible.

Proud of the progress these women are making each week, and honoured to guide them again today.

The women in our Stand Safe self-defence program are doing incredibly well. Week by week, they’re learning how to stay balanced under pressure, how to use technique instead of strength, and how to escape common grabs like wrist holds, clothing grabs, and hair grabs. These are practical skills that build real confidence, not just in class, but in everyday life. This program matters because self-defence isn’t about being aggressive or strong. It’s about awareness, control, and knowing you have options when something doesn’t feel right. Watching these ladies support each other and grow more confident each session is exactly why we run it.

This morning I’m leading Class 2 of StandSafe, and I keep thinking about this:

Self-defence isn’t about being aggressive. It’s about understanding your body, your reactions, and your right to feel safe.

In our last class, we talked about fight, flight, and freeze ,the responses your body chooses before your mind has time to think. There’s no “wrong” reaction. There’s only what you’ve trained for.

That’s what we do in StandSafe.
We train simple, reliable skills.
We breathe under pressure.
We protect ourselves from a strong, safe guard.
We practice strikes that work when adrenaline is high.

Confidence doesn’t come from being fearless. It comes from showing up, learning, and repeating the basics until your body trusts itself.

After 30+ years in martial arts, I’ve decided it’s time to pass on what I’ve learned , the real side of self-defence. This isn’t movie-style fighting. It’s about awareness, reaction, and survival.

I grew up in London , a big city that teaches you quickly how the real world works. I’ve seen what happens when people don’t know how to protect themselves.
When I moved to Malta back in 2000, it felt safe. But let’s be honest ,it’s not quite the same anymore.
