Sighting of Rare Sea Slug at Beau Vallon Beach

The Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment would like to inform the public that several sightings of a Rare, venomous sea slug known as “ Blue Dragon” Glaucus atlanticus have been spotted and reported by members of the public on Beau Vallon beach yesterday. The Ministry warns the public that the “ Blue Dragon” carry a painful sting and public are advised not to get too close if they see these colorful animals, likely to Catch their attention . Even if 3 cm big, blue dragons are expert hunters. It’s preferred prey is the blue bottle jellyfish (man of war) also observed on the beach yesterday.
If a Blue dragon stings the following symptoms can occur, 1. Nausea, 2. Pain, 3. Vomiting 4. Acute allergic contact dermatitis. Research from other countries have also stated that aside from causing a very painful sting, this gastropod could potentially kill a person, especially those who experience severe allergic reaction to its sting.
Assistance from LWMA has been sought to clean the beach when the species wash ashore to prevent any casualties.
Members of the public are advised to get in touch with the Ministry to report other sightings and to immediately seek medical attention if stung by the species. The Ministry will continue to monitor this situation and will keep the public informed.
