🦟 World Mosquito Day

Mosquitoes… it’s hard to think of a less popular insect! 😅

And yet, like every living creature, they have a place in nature. Their larvae provide food for fish, amphibians and other insects, while adult mosquitoes are part of the diet of many birds, bats and other predators. 🌿

So why does it sometimes feel like they are everywhere?

Because humans have significantly altered ecosystems. Our gardens, water tanks, plant pots, gutters and other small collections of water can create numerous habitats where mosquitoes can breed.

In Mauritius, the traveller’s tree, native to Madagascar, is an interesting example: the bases of its large leaves can collect water, providing mosquitoes with an ideal place to reproduce. 🌴

So rather than trying to eliminate mosquitoes from nature, we can learn to reduce the conditions that encourage them to multiply around us:

💧 Remove stagnant water
🐟 In suitable ponds, encourage fish that feed on mosquito larvae
⛲ Keep water circulating
🌿 Use aromatic plants such as citronella or rosemary in outdoor spaces

Nature is not a problem to eradicate.
It is a balance to understand. 🌍

And sometimes, the best way to tackle a natural problem is simply to stop creating the ideal conditions for it to thrive.
