🦈 SHARKS OF THE MONTH🦈

August brought another amazing month of tiger shark encounters, with over 74 different individuals recorded, all of them female.

Sunny takes the crown as our most sighted tiger shark this month, with around 30 sightings.

Comeback of the month: After more than 2½ years, Eli has finally been sighted again! She was spotted out in the blue, highlighting the value of long-term photo-ID monitoring in outside the tiger harbour.

Our juvenile of the month (again) is Bonita, as she continues to stand out for her inquisitive and curious behaviour, regularly approaching divers and researchers and providing some memorable encounters.

We continued collecting samples for our Shark Tissue Research for Integrative Population Ecology (STRIPE) project, sampling different types of tiger sharks to investigate individual variation and population ecology.

It was a quieter month for hammerhead sightings, with only 6 sightings across 4 different dive sites.

Our catalogue has now grown to over 325 individually identified tiger sharks, ranging from juveniles to large adult females. Among them is Paola, a large pregnant female first recorded at the end of 2025 and finally confirmed in August 2026.

Reaching more than 325 identified individuals is a testament to the value of long-term photo-ID monitoring, led by Fuvahmulah Dive School and Pelagic Divers Fuvahmulah. Every sighting contributes to a growing database that allows us to better understand the residency, reproduction ecology and behaviour of the tiger sharks around Fuvahmulah.

Diving in Fuvahmulah means deep drop-offs, incredible pelagic encounters and big adrenaline. But whether you’re diving with our resident Tiger Sharks or exploring the plateau, understanding DCS is essential to diving safe and within your limits.

When we spend everyday with sharks, we begin to realize we’re not that different from them.

Today in collaboration with Erika Veterinary Clinic, we provided consultations, TNR and performed surgeries like neutering and other procedures for cats and other exotic animals for the local community.
