THIN-ARMED SHRIMP

Discover the enchanting world of thin-armed shrimps! Our night dive in Thulusdhoo, Maldives, uncovered these mesmerizing crustaceans with transparent bodies and striking colors. They inhabit a variety of environments, from sandy caves to coral reefs, and play a crucial role in the marine food web.

As part of the Palaemonidae family, thin-armed shrimps display unique characteristics like transparent bodies with white flecks and a distinctive red stripe. Their behavior and appearance make them an intriguing subject for underwater observation and study.

Night Dive Discovery: The Decorator Spider Crab of Thulusdhoo House Reef

Explore the intriguing lives of decorator crabs, a diverse group of over **1,500 species** (mostly within the *Majoidea* superfamily) found in oceans worldwide. These clever crustaceans, including spider and moss crabs, are famous for their unique method of survival: **decorating** their bodies with materials from their environment.

This specific crab was a fascinating find during one of our recent night dives on **Thulusdhoo house reef**, where its eyes reflected in our lights, revealing its presence despite its expert disguise.

# # The Art of Decoration

Using specialized, hooked, Velcro-like bristles called **setae** on their carapaces and legs, the crabs attach items like algae, sponges, anemones, and even small shells. This behavior serves a dual purpose:

# # # Camouflage (Crypsis)
The decorations help them blend seamlessly into coral reefs or kelp forests, making them nearly invisible to predators.

# # # Chemical Defense (Aposematism)
Some species strategically choose noxious or stinging organisms, like sea anemones, to use as a living, chemical shield, warning predators that they are not a tasty meal.

# # Resourcefulness and Adaptability

Known for their meticulous selection process—some are picky **specialists**, while others are **generalists**—decorator crabs will even recycle their favorite **outfits** after molting to a new shell, showcasing their resourcefulness and adaptability in the marine world.

Their captivating behavior makes them a fascinating subject for divers and a prime example of nature's ingenious adaptations.
