Learn to manage your boss
Having worked at senior, Executive and Board levels I have realized that managing your boss is one of the key elements to your prosperity.
Bosses are human beings like all of us with different expectations. The most challenging skills are soft skills. For me say sales targets and submission of reports are non negatiable; these have to be done.
The quicker you learn about your bosses expectations the better. I remember I always used to have challenges with approvals at Management Committee meetings as my bosses would punch holes into my proposal because I was used to the previous bosses. I later learnt that I needed to engage them before the meeting and running them through my ideas. It’s called stakeholder management.
Every boss comes with his/her ways of working and most of the times it’s the soft skills that you need to master to manage them. This only comes out when expectations are well understood.
Don’t just go with your old flow with your new boss more especially if they just joined you or you have just joined a new organisation. Where you think you can do differently don’t just impliment your ideas. Engage and engage more!
This notion that the boss will feel me is not good. Sometimes bosses come with some stereotype due to what he heard when he/she did her research make sure you prove that wrong by understanding his expectation and continuous request for feedback just to make sure you are on track and aligned. Where the boss is off track engage her/him and illuminate in him how things can be done differently (they are only human beings they may be priviledged to be in that role). Most of them are just the first among the best
Have more coffee with your boss!
