As the year ends let’s take a moment to reflect on the grit, determination, and fighting spirit that have gotten us this far as entrepreneurs. Every challenge, every setback, and every pivot has been a lesson in resilience and a show of strength.
As my experience has grown, I'm more than well aware that business isn't always a straight line. It is often a narrow path less travelled by and requires a lot of sacrifice. I've also come to realise one of the hardest things to do is embrace change. Whether that’s rethinking your business model, changing location, rebranding or even innovating your systems. But it’s often in those moments of fear that we find our true path forward, I call it divine redirection. Imagine the possibility that the new thing you would like to implement in 2025, the idea you're not so sure about, might just be what takes you forward, helps you stay afloat or even grow and excel.
So, as we enter the new year, let’s keep pushing, stay forward-thinking, and remember: it’s the courage to evolve that can make all the difference. Our businesses may be small, but we're mighty at heart! 🦁 🚀

Lately, I've been reading through this 256 page document on the MSE listing requirements and I think this should be a target for every growth-focused entrepreneur.
Meeting MSE listing requirements should be seen not as something to do in the future but as an achievable goal unlocking a plethora of opportunities. The minimum subscribed capital requirement K400 million, while a key requirement, is not an out-of-reach. There are many businesses in Malawi even sole proprietary businesses that easily meet his requirement and it can be done by many other businesses with careful planning, solid financial management, and satisfactory growth.
For CFOs, the capital markets represent a powerful tool for securing long-term funding. Instead of depending on loans or other traditional financing options, listing on the stock exchange opens the door to a broader pool of capital from public investors. This not only supports business expansion but also builds the company’s financial standing and reputation over time. Moreover, the process of preparing for a listing instills strong governance practices; public companies are held to higher standards of accountability, transparency, and compliance. These kind of frameworks improve internal controls, and build investor confidence.
Furthermore, having more companies listed on the MSE is beneficial not just for the businesses, but for the market and economy as a whole. A diverse range of listings deepens and broadens the capital markets, offering investors more opportunities to diversify their portfolios. It creates a more dynamic and liquid market, which can attract a lot of investment. For business owners, this creates more avenues to raise capital and expand operations.
At the macro level, the capital markets in MW are still at their nascent stage and not able to fulfil their core functions. However a well functioning stock market instrumental for the capital markets. It encourages savings, boosts investments, and fosters economic growth through increased access to capital for businesses. More listings mean more job creation, more growth in industries, and ultimately, a more resilient and competitive economy. The benefits of an active capital market extend beyond the businesses and investors directly involved—they ripple out to society at large, building prosperity for everyone.
Due to lower width of the stock market, with only 16 listings on the Main Board there's definitely a shortage of investment opportunities on our market. Recently we have witnessed Blantyre Hotels Plc seeking to raise MK 62.4 billion from their rights issue opened on on the 25th of November and closing on the 6th of December. This goes to show the strength of our markets and how available capital in Malawi can be. I would like to encourage as entrepreneurs and business owners at whatever stage of business to consider the MSE as a long term financing solution and an ultimate target.

I've just published an article on derivatives in Malawi. The article touches on what derivatives and derivative markets are, the features of a derivative market, the different kinds of derivatives, and the state of derivative markets in Malawi. I hope you enjoy it and find it insightful. 📈

When people ask me why I tell them "Why not". I've learnt to never leave what was meant for today for tomorrow. Tomorrow doesn't exist and certain opportunities don't come twice.
