Early Life & Rise

Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, called Diogo Jota, was born on December 4, 1996, in Porto, Portugal. He first played at a small club, Gondomar SC, and then moved to Paços de Ferreira, where he made his first real steps in professional football in 2014 .

Big Moves & Success in England

In 2016, he signed with Atlético Madrid, but spent much time on loan. He played for Porto and then Wolverhampton Wanderers. With Wolves, he scored 44 goals in 131 games and helped the team gain promotion to the Premier League .

In September 2020, Jota joined Liverpool FC for about £41 million. He quickly became an important player, known for scoring and fitting into various forward positions. At Liverpool, he won the FA Cup, League Cup, and the Premier League in 2025 .

Portugal National Team

He represented Portugal at youth levels and made his senior debut in November 2019. He played in Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, and was part of Portugal’s winning squads in the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025 .

Personal Life

Met long-time partner Rute Cardoso at around 13 years old; they stayed together through his career .

They had three young children together and married on June 22, 2025 .

Off the pitch, Jota loved video games and e-sports, even forming his own team .

Death

On July 3, 2025, while traveling by car through Zamora, Spain, Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva accidentally crashed their Lamborghini after a tyre blew out. The car went off the road and caught fire; both brothers died at the scene—Diogo was 28, André was 25 .

Both brothers were honored in a joint funeral in their hometown, Gondomar, Portugal, with many players and fans in attendance .
