Walter Nyamilandu’s Nebulousness

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) President Walter Nyamilandu Manda is reportedly advancing ambitions of becoming FAM’s ‘life’ president. Walter has on two occasions announced that he would not seek re-election only to change his mind at the eleventh hour. In the 2015 elections, he had indicated that he changed his mind to harvest what he had sown. Note the word harvest. Harvest signifies the end of a cycle and by implication water indicated ‘The term was his conclusion’.

What has changed? Nothing! Those close to Walter have indicated that he was sincere when he indicated that he would not seek re-election and that he was getting ready to hand over the mantle to the next person. However, his association with a political party in the country has forced him to stand again. The party is pushing for her candidature purportedly to have a grip at all influential positions in Malawi. It is reported that the party has even promised to sponsor his campaign.
On the other hand, some affiliates who benefit financially are also pushing him to stand again as that would guarantee their continual revenue. However, the few that are pushing for his re-election are not having a majority backing of their entire committees. One member of an influential committee which has a second largest number of voters based in the Southern Region indicated “let him stand again and get embarrassed, we have agreed to eat his money and disappoint him in December. How do you support someone who has failed to even by you a desk or chair for our operations leaving us to operate from a dilapidated BAT ground”

One thing for sure is that shall Walter decide to contest for a fourth term as FA president, it will be an interesting contest and may be the second time that the FA Presidency would have real competition as he will compete against Mwenda his current vice president and so far little known Chipanga of Karonga.
