National Schools Chess Championship Receives Major Boost

The future of Malawi chess continues to shine brighter as NICO Asset Managers has increased its sponsorship of the National Schools Chess League (NSCL) from K24 million to K35 million for the 2026 season.

The announcement was made yesterday during the launch of the 2026 National Schools Chess Championship at Kalibu Academy in Blantyre.

Speaking at the event, Chess Association of Malawi (CHESSAM) Secretary General Gift Howahowa described the league as a vital platform for nurturing young talent, promoting academic excellence and strengthening school sports development across the country.

NICO Asset Managers Chief Executive Officer Daniel Dunga said the company's continued investment is inspired by the similarities between chess and investment, both of which require patience, strategy, discipline and long-term planning.

Representing the Malawi National Council of Sports, Sports Development and Recreation Officer Wiza Msowoya commended NICO Asset Managers for their commitment to youth development, describing the championship as an important talent identification pathway that is helping shape the next generation of Malawi's chess stars.

With increased support and growing participation, the 2026 National Schools Chess Championship promises to provide more opportunities for young learners to develop their skills both on and off the chessboard
