The Malawi National Volleyball Teams are back in action today at the CAVB Zone 6 Senior LA28 Qualifiers in Harare, Zimbabwe, as they continue their quest for success on the regional stage.
The Malawi Womenโs National Team, the Infernos, return to the court at 13:00 hrs to take on Namibia in their final preliminary round match. The team will be looking to finish the group phase on a positive note and build momentum heading into the next stage of the competition.
Later in the day, the Malawi Menโs National Team will face Zambia at 17:00 hrs in another crucial encounter as they conclude their preliminary round fixtures.

MEN'S INFERNOS FALL TO HOSTS ZIMBABWE
Malawiโs Menโs National Volleyball Team put up a spirited fight but suffered a 3-1 defeat to hosts Zimbabwe in their second match of the CAVB Zone VI LA28 Qualifiers in Harare.
The Menโs Infernos started strongly, claiming the opening set 25-21 before Zimbabwe responded to take the next three sets 25-19, 26-24 and 25-19.
Malawi came close to forcing a fifth set after a hard-fought third set but the hosts edged the contest to take control of the match.
The Menโs Infernos will now turn their attention to their final preliminary match against Zambia tomorrow at 17:00 as they aim to finish the group stage on a positive note

National Schools Chess Championship Receives Major Boost
The future of Malawi chess continues to shine brighter as NICO Asset Managers has increased its sponsorship of the National Schools Chess League (NSCL) from K24 million to K35 million for the 2026 season.
The announcement was made yesterday during the launch of the 2026 National Schools Chess Championship at Kalibu Academy in Blantyre.
Speaking at the event, Chess Association of Malawi (CHESSAM) Secretary General Gift Howahowa described the league as a vital platform for nurturing young talent, promoting academic excellence and strengthening school sports development across the country.
NICO Asset Managers Chief Executive Officer Daniel Dunga said the company's continued investment is inspired by the similarities between chess and investment, both of which require patience, strategy, discipline and long-term planning.
Representing the Malawi National Council of Sports, Sports Development and Recreation Officer Wiza Msowoya commended NICO Asset Managers for their commitment to youth development, describing the championship as an important talent identification pathway that is helping shape the next generation of Malawi's chess stars.
With increased support and growing participation, the 2026 National Schools Chess Championship promises to provide more opportunities for young learners to develop their skills both on and off the chessboard

It was a challenging start for Malawi's senior volleyball teams at the CAVB Zone VI Qualifiers in Harare, Zimbabwe, as both teams narrowly missed victories in their opening matches.
The Women's National Team fell 3-0 to Zambia, while the Men's Infernos fought bravely before Namibia staged a comeback to claim a 3-2 victory in a thrilling encounter.

Last week, 50 women from across Malawi completed the first phase of the Womenโs Leadership and Sport for All Programme, held from 1โ5 June 2026 at the Malawi National Council of Sports Headquarters in Blantyre.
The initiative is designed to equip women with the skills, confidence, and knowledge needed to take up leadership roles within the sports sector and contribute to the growth of sport in their communities.
Participants underwent intensive training in: Financial Management, Event Management, Resource Mobilisation, Safeguarding in Sport and Gender Mainstreaming in Sport, as well as Audit.
The programme will conclude in July, when participants return for the final sessions before graduating and receiving their certificates.
The Womenโs Leadership and Sport for All Programme is an initiative of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5, aimed at increasing women's participation and representation in sport leadership across the region.

Team Malawi's preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games have received a major boost after FDH Bank Plc donated K100 million to the Malawi Olympic and Commonwealth Games Committee (MOCGC).
Presenting the sponsorship in Lilongwe on Wednesday, FDH Bank Head of Personal and Business Banking, Daniel Khamula, said the contribution demonstrates the bank's continued commitment to supporting sports development and empowering Malawian athletes to excel on the international stage.
Receiving the donation, Malawi National Council of Sports Acting Chief Executive Officer, Ivy Chinangwa, commended FDH Bank for its timely support, describing it as a significant contribution towards Team Malawi's preparations for the Games.
MOCGC Vice President Francis Kakhuta Banda also welcomed the sponsorship and called on more corporate partners to join the drive to support Team Malawi as the nation gears up for the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for 23 July to 2 August 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Malawi Women's National Volleyball Team, the Infernos, showed great determination in their opening match at the ongoing CAVB Zone VI Senior LA28 Qualifiers in Harare, Zimbabwe, despite going down 3-0 to Zambia.

The third set was a closely contested battle, with the Infernos pushing Zambia all the way before narrowly missing out.
