Scorchers Unite Malawi

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has hailed the Malawi Scorchers for uniting Malawians through their historic success.

Speaking on his return from South Africa, the President wished the team well ahead of tomorrow’s match and urged Malawians to embrace the unity and teamwork demonstrated by the Scorchers.

“The Scorchers have managed to achieve something that we politicians have never been able to do they have managed to unite this country.”

President Mutharika also called on Malawians to learn from the team’s selflessness, teamwork and collective spirit.

Day Two of the Malawi Youth Games National Finals is underway in Lilongwe, with young athletes from across the country battling for national honours.

Competitions are taking place at various venues across Lilongwe, including the Kamuzu Institute for Sports, Kamuzu Barracks Courts, Lilongwe community ground, Civo Stadium and Lilongwe Technical Ground, with action in football, basketball, netball, volleyball, chess and athletics.

The intensity is rising as our young stars showcase their talent, determination and passion for sport.

The Malawi Youth Games continue tomorrow as young athletes from public and private primary and secondary schools battle for national glory in Lilongwe.

The Malawi Youth Games National Finals are underway in Lilongwe, bringing together more than 1,200 learners from primary and secondary schools across the country to compete for national honours and showcase their sporting talent.

The sixth edition of the Malawi Youth Games started earlier this year at the grassroots level, with learners competing through the zone/cluster, district and education division stages before qualifying for the national finals.

More than 1.2 million learners registered for this year’s Games, competing in seven sporting disciplines Netball, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Athletics, Chess and Handball.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, President of the Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA), Mr Blackson Malamula, said the national finals are expected to produce highly competitive contests while providing an important platform for talent identification.

The national finals are being staged at several venues across Lilongwe. Kamuzu Institute for Sports is hosting girls’ football, netball, chess, volleyball, athletics and handball, while boys’ football is being played at CIVO Upper Stadium and Lilongwe Community Ground. Netball matches are also being held at Kamuzu Barracks Courts.

The Games provide a critical pathway for identifying and nurturing young sporting talent while promoting participation, discipline, teamwork and healthy competition among learners.

The sixth edition of the Malawi Youth Games will conclude on Monday, 17 August 2026, with the national champions crowned in the respective disciplines.
