“Pasuwa Retains Full 23-Man Squad for Ethiopia Friendlies”___ Yalero Newspaper!

Malawi National Football Team head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has opted to keep all 23 players he initially called into camp for the upcoming international friendly matches against Ethiopia.

The Flames departed for Addis Ababa on Thursday through Chileka International Airport in Blantyre ahead of the two matches scheduled for Friday and Tuesday, which form part of the team’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Operations Director Gomezgani Zakazaka confirmed that no player was dropped from the squad before departure.

“It is the coach’s responsibility to decide which players he wants for any assignment. In this case, he has chosen to travel with all the players he summoned for the two matches,” said Zakazaka.

He explained that squad sizes are often determined by the regulations governing a particular competition or agreements between participating associations.

“For tournaments, there are usually limits on the number of players. For example, during the Four Nations Tournament in Botswana, the maximum was 25 players. In friendly matches, the number normally ranges between 21 and 23 players depending on the arrangements between the teams involved,” he said.

The squad includes several returning faces, among them Francisco Madinga, Christopher Kumwembe, Chifundo Mphasi, Dennis Chembezi, Blessings Singini and Washali Jaziya, who have all been handed another opportunity to impress at international level.

Also in the travelling party is United States-based forward Luciano Rundles, who could earn his first senior cap for Malawi.

The Flames will, however, be without several foreign-based players, including Patrick Mwaungulu, Chikumbutso Salima, Chawanangwa Kaonga, Mayele Malango and Richard Mbulu.

The two encounters against Ethiopia are expected to provide valuable preparation for Malawi as they continue building towards the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.

“Temwa Defends Absence from Scorchers Duty, Reaffirms Commitment to National Team”___ Yalero Newspaper!

United States-based Malawian women's football star Temwa Chawinga has explained her decision to miss the Malawi Women’s National Football Team’s international friendlies, saying she had to prioritise an important personal commitment.

The Kansas City Current forward has come under scrutiny after opting out of the Scorchers' FIFA international window matches against Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, with some supporters questioning her dedication to the national cause.

However, speaking in an interview to NPL, the reigning NWSL Most Valuable Player insisted her absence should not be interpreted as a lack of commitment to the national team.

“This is the first time I have voluntarily excused myself from national duty. The other occasions I missed were due to injuries,” said Temwa.

“I chose to be transparent about the situation. I could have claimed to be injured, but that would not have been honest. I prefer to be truthful about my circumstances.”

The 2025 Women’s Ballon d’Or and FIFA Women’s Best Player nominee acknowledged the criticism directed at her but said she respects the opinions of supporters.

“People are entitled to their views and I respect that. Criticism is something I have learned to live with throughout my career. It comes with the game,” she said.

Temwa further revealed that postponing her planned trip was not a practical option due to commitments connected to the project.

“I had already made arrangements and changing them would have created complications. Nevertheless, I remain fully dedicated to representing Malawi and I look forward to rejoining the team soon. I wish the players and technical staff all the best in Tanzania,” she added.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Operations Director Gomezgani Zakazaka said the association's immediate attention remains on the upcoming matches, with discussions regarding the player’s absence expected at a later stage.

“At the moment, our focus is on the Tanzania fixtures. Any discussions regarding the matter can be addressed after the games,” said Zakazaka.

Temwa informed the Scorchers technical panel that she would be unavailable for the trip because it coincides with a scheduled visit to China, where she is expected to meet suppliers involved in her house construction project.

The 27-year-old has made only one appearance for the Scorchers in their last 15 matches, with her most recent outing coming against Zambia in an international friendly played in Lusaka in February 2025.
