What we witnessed at the Malawi Defence Force 10 Kilometers Cross Country Marathon was nothing short of pure grit, discipline, and unbreakable military spirit. Cobbe Barracks Athletics Club once again proved that hard work, consistency, and teamwork always pay off.
Against tough competition and a demanding course at Zomba Golf Course, Cobbe Barracks athletes ran with heart, courage, and determination. The Menβs Cross Country Team fought fiercely to secure Position 2, while the Womenβs Cross Country Team dominated the race to claim Position 1 β an achievement that speaks volumes about their preparation, endurance, and winning mentality. This was not easy, but Cobbe made it look possible through relentless effort and unity.
Individually, Cobbe Barracks Athletics Team member Kephas Kasten delivered a masterclass performance, successfully defending his title in the menβs 10km race with an impressive time of 33 minutes and 39 seconds. On the womenβs side, Asimenye Simwaka of Lilongwe Admin Athletics Team defended her crown in 43 minutes and 59 seconds, showcasing elite-level stamina and focus.
In the team marathon category, 1 Malawi Rifles lifted the womenβs team title, while 3 Malawi Rifles claimed the menβs team crown β further highlighting the depth of talent and competitiveness within the MDF athletics family.
MDF Deputy Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Kondwani Gift Kalino, expressed satisfaction with the progress made, emphasizing that such competitions strengthen unity, physical fitness, discipline, and teamwork across all units.
Cobbe Barracks Athletics Club didnβt just run β they represented excellence, resilience, and the true fighting spirit of the force. The sweat, the sacrifices, the early mornings, and the endless training sessions have spoken loudly. This is military athletics at its finest.

The 2026 Malawi Defence Force (MDF) interservice cross country competition is currently underway at Gymkhana Club in Zomba.
Cross country running is a sport in which teams and individuals run races on outdoor courses over natural terrain, testing endurance, discipline and mental strength.
Lieutenant General Kondwani Gift Kalino, MDF Deputy Chief, is presiding over the event.
A total of 234 athletes from 20 MDF units are taking part in the competition. Each unit has fielded 12 athletes (6 men and 6 women) to compete in the 10-kilometre race.
Among the competitors, Cobbe Barracks Athletics Team has arrived fully prepared and highly motivated, carrying a strong reputation for resilience, teamwork and competitive spirit. With their intense training, unity and determination, all eyes are on Cobbe as they push hard to dominate the course and make a strong statement in this yearβs competition.
At the end of the races, outstanding performers will be selected to form a team that will represent the MDF in competitions against civilian athletes at national level

She has proudly represented the team and the nation in cross country, track & field competitions, earning victories at home and competing across borders. Her achievements speak not only of talent, but of hard work, consistency, and unwavering commitment to service and sport.
Faith is an inspiration to young athletes, women in uniform, and everyone who believes that greatness is built through sacrifice and determination.

Stern Lifa Commissioned as Second Lieutenant in MDF
Stern Lifa, 27, has been commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), becoming only the second athlete to achieve this distinction. His promotion follows the trail blazed by celebrated sprinter Bernadettar Asimenye Kwimbira-Mzika, who helped open doors for athletes moving into military leadership.
Latifa, a short-distance runner who has represented Malawi at the Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games, is widely respected for his discipline and dedication. A graduate of the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), he has long emphasized the role of education in shaping both his athletic and professional success. His achievement sets a strong example for all sportsmen and women, showing the importance of prioritizing education alongside sporting careers.
His commissioning marks another milestone in the growing partnership between the MDF and Malawiβs athletics community.
