Tsuki Kage Ryu revived an old tradition this past weekend with a retreat at the dojo in El Pescadero, Baja California Sur. In attendance were senior students Rebecca Page sensei and Darlene Dull, along with karateka Marek, Elizabeth and Daphne. The weekend featured two seminars by master Shotokan and aikido instructor Rick Hotton sensei with other students zooming in from around North America.
Hotton sensei took us to the next level, drilling down into deeper bassai dai and jo technique, and inspirational metaphors about focus, awareness and intent. If you don't know who he is already, look him up!
There was a lot of good energy this weekend and a lot of talk about doing it again next year, so maybe the old tradition is fully reborn- coming up on our 40th anniversary in 2027!!

Congratulations to the karateka that pushed through another TKR fitness season- Today we capped off the challenge with our annual kick marathon. It took us 2 hours to complete 2026 front kicks. People were on the screen from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Florida and Baja.
The calisthenics challenge was to make at least 2 classes per week between Halloween and New Years day. We ramp up the reps until we're doing 200 push-ups and 500 core reps in every class by Thanksgiving. Roughly 2,600 push-ups and 6000 crunches throughout the fall. Now we will ramp back down to our normal count of 100 push ups and 250 abs per class and get back to our kata practice. We looked it up-this has been our seasonal tradition for over 20 years.
Next week this crew is converging at the Baja dojo for a martial arts retreat. We will have guest master instructor Rick Hotton sensei giving a seminar on bassai dai and jo partner kata.

Double cali season is in full swing at TKR-we've been ramping up through the fall and now have reached our full 2X count at Thanksgiving. That's 200 push ups and 500 core reps in every class till the New Year. We dedicate the holiday season to fitness to combat those extra celebration calories. Students have to make at least 2 classes per week to 'claim' the season. It culminates with 2026 front kicks in early January to kick in the new year. How long has this tradition been going on at TKR? Nobody remembers-at least 15 years, maybe 20.
