¿Quienes somos? El único Sistema Holistico Marcial

18/08/2026

The Kingdom of Hanthawaddy: The Legendary Founding of Hongsawatoi

The Kingdom of Hanthawaddy: The Legendary Founding of Hongsawatoi

The Kingdom of Hanthawaddy (Mon: ဟံသာဝတဳ – Hongsawatoi) was one of the greatest centers of Mon civilization in Southeast Asia. While its history is supported by chronicles and archaeological evidence, the origin of the city is best remembered through a beautiful legend passed down for generations.

According to Mon tradition, the area where Hongsawatoi (present-day Bago) now stands was once covered by the sea, with only a small island rising above the water.

One day, two sacred Hamsa birds (mythical swans) landed on the tiny island. Because the island was too small for both to stand side by side, the male Hamsa stood upon the back of the female. This graceful image came to symbolize harmony, devotion, and enduring unity.

The legend further tells that the Buddha visited this place and prophesied:

"In the future, this land shall become a great and prosperous city of the Mon people."

As time passed, the sea gradually receded, revealing fertile land. A magnificent city was established and named Hongsawatoi (Hanthawaddy), meaning "The City of the Hamsa" or "The City of the Sacred Swan."

From that day onward, the pair of Hamsa birds became the royal emblem of Hanthawaddy and remains one of the most enduring symbols of the Mon people.
Historically, Hanthawaddy emerged as an important urban center around the 9th–10th centuries CE. Following the fall of Thaton in 1057 CE, many Mon people migrated to the region, helping transform Hanthawaddy into the principal political and cultural center of Lower Myanmar.
The kingdom reached its greatest glory under King Razadarit (Rajadhirat), who united the Mon realms and successfully defended them against Ava. Later, during the reign of King Dhammazedi, Hanthawaddy entered its Golden Age, becoming renowned for Buddhism, commerce, diplomacy, architecture, and Mon culture.
Today, the image of the two Hamsa birds continues to represent not only the legendary foundation of Hanthawaddy but also the resilience, identity, and cultural heritage of the Mon people throughout the world.
