When Hurricane Otis — a Category 5 storm — devastated Acapulco, Mexico in late October 2023, Mexico City police officer Arizbeth Dionisio Ambrosio was deployed to help with emergency response. In the chaos following one of the most destructive storms in Mexican history, a mother approached her unable to feed her four-month-old son. The infant had not eaten in hours and was crying from hunger.

Dionisio, a 33-year-old mother herself with a one-year-old at home, did not hesitate. She offered to nurse the baby, and she did — while on duty, in uniform. The moment was photographed and went around the world. In recognition of her compassion, the Mexico City Ministry of Citizens Security promoted her from “Policía Primero” to “Suboficial,” honoring what her department called her vocation of service to citizens and her representation of everything the badge is supposed to stand for.

There were no cameras set up. There was no audience. There was just a woman who saw a hungry baby and responded as a mother first — and as an officer second.

Isaiah 49:15 says, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne?”

Some moments of goodness are so pure they travel across time, language, and borders. This is one of them.
