Best Cenotes in Mexico
“Dos Ojos” means “Two Eyes” in Spanish. The name comes from the two large circular cenotes that look like two eyes when seen from above.
Key Facts
• Type: Flooded cave / cenote system
• Explored length: Over 90 km (55+ miles) of passages
• Water temperature: About 24–25°C (75–77°F) year-round
• Visibility: Often 100 meters or more
• Depth: Generally 8–10 meters in the cavern areas
Major Dive Routes
1. Dos Ojos Line
The most popular cavern dive with spectacular stalactites and strong natural light.
2. Bat Cave (Cueva de los Murciélagos)
A dive that reaches an air chamber where bats live in the cave ceiling.
3. Barbie Line
A longer route connecting toward the massive system of Sac Actun.
Geological Importance
The caves formed thousands of years ago when sea levels were lower and the caves were dry. During that time, stalactites and stalagmites formed. When sea levels rose after the last Ice Age, the caves flooded, creating the cenotes we dive today.
Why Divers Love It
Divers visit Dos Ojos for:
• crystal-clear water
• dramatic light beams
• prehistoric rock formations
• safe cavern routes for guided diving
It is widely considered one of the best cavern diving sites on Earth.
Connection to the World’s Largest Cave System
The Dos Ojos system is connected to the enormous Sac Actun cave system, which is currently the longest underwater cave system in the world.
