🧘🏼Dolly Parton was a Yogi🤠

Based on the messages, emails, and calls I received on the heels of Dolly Parton’s surely direct ascent to heaven, I guess I can claim quite confidently that to know me is to know that Dolly is (and always will be) my number one diva.

I grew up mostly on Dolly Parton and Barbra Streisand, thanks to my sweet mother (fingers crossed Dolly and Sheila get to have a moment in heaven together).

Nights in the kitchen, the heart of my childhood home, with my mom, sister, and many combinations of aunts, family friends, and cousins, often featured Dolly’s music, as we stood around the kitchen island, gabbing, laughing, singing, and dancing.

I have a viscerally nostalgic experience when I listen to Hard Candy Christmas especially—Mom and Aunt Cindy belting that song about resilience and overcoming, one that I know meant something so deep to my mother considering her rough upbringing that she bravely rose above. A pot of beans and rice on the counter, Sheila’s famous holiday fudge she would make for family, friends, and coworkers. Home sweet home in the truest sense of the phrase.

So, needless to say, Dolly is really in my DNA.

My breath was taken away when I saw the New York Times notification that this monumental inspiration in my life had passed on to another plane. Dolly, with her hair as high as the heavens and a smile that gave all the rhinestones she donned a run for their money, has always seemed invincible. Destined, somehow, to be eternally here.

But, ultimately, I know better. I know too well, actually, having lost my mom at the age of 26.

Fu*k cancer (pardon my French) 😉

It is only human nature to want to grip and grasp at that which is precious. The Yoga Sutras speak to this through the Kleshas, or the five hindrances on the path to self-cultivation. Raga, our attachment to what brings us pleasure and what we love, can make the reality of impermanence hit us like a ton of bricks. And Abhinivesha, or fear of death, is perhaps the greatest common roadblock for all of us, whether explicitly appearing or flowing like a quiet undercurrent in our subconscious.

When something precious slips away, I think ultimately gratitude is the way out of grief. It is a process, though.

It was amazing to see the response to Dolly’s passing and the breadth of people and places it spanned. It softened the blow of that loss, because one way to live forever is to leave a legacy behind…and she sure has. Her music, yes, but it really was her kindness and the simple way in which she shared it that was one of a kind. Cosmic, really. She always let people know where she stood and what she stood for, but in a way that turned others toward that same universal truth: that we are all love at our core. She was frequently vocal in her support for the LGBTQ+ community, which was particularly profound to me. A devout Southern Christian country star in my corner? Yes, please.

I think of the lessons from the Bhagavad Gita about karma. Karma not as something that happens to you, but karma as action. Going to bat for the greater good, doing good work without an attachment to the outcome. In a sense, doing it out of the genuine desire to leave places and people better than they were found.

Dolly did a lot of that. Aside from all the rhinestones, wigs, smash hits, and her larger-than-life persona, there was an extraordinary amount of quiet service happening underneath it all. She put millions of books into the hands of children through her Imagination Library, in honor of her father, who never learned to read. She gave scholarships and supported education in the mountains that raised her. She helped families who lost their homes in the devastating Tennessee wildfires. She gave generously to medical research. Again and again, she took what her life had given her and sent so much of it back out into the world.

This reminds me of one of the ethical principles from the Yoga Sutras: Aparigraha, or non-possessiveness. I saw so many posts along the lines of, “Dolly Parton could have been a BILLIONAIRE, but she gave back instead.” In a world where accumulating more and more is so often held up as the ultimate measure of success, Dolly seemed to understand that there was another measure entirely: what you did with what you had.

There are quite a few powerful people and “leaders” who could learn a lesson or one hundred from Dolly. 🙄

And then, of course, there is her music… poignant, poetic, and placing so much truth within the boundary of a song. Maybe that is why real good music can hold such an extraordinary place in our lives. Truth is timeless. It moves with us. A song can belong to one version of you and then somehow follow you into the next. It can transport you across decades in a matter of seconds, back to people and places that no longer exist in quite the same way.

Dolly’s music followed me from my kitchen at 3317 Goldfinch into my own life, my dance choreography, and eventually into the yoga studio. My Dolly Flow playlist has been a staple of my teaching since my early days as a yoga teacher. It has been the soundtrack of many classes, and judging by the messages I’ve received in the past few days, quite a few of you remember it. So it feels especially fitting to share it here.

Maybe put it on and roll out your mat. Maybe play it while you cook dinner, clean the house, drive somewhere, or sing and dance around your own kitchen with people you love. Because if grief teaches us anything, perhaps it is to participate fully while we’re here. To do the good work. To love people well. To give some of what we have away to benefit the greater whole.

And every once in a while, a song comes on and time folds in on itself. There’s a pot of beans and rice on the counter. Mom and Aunt Cindy are belting out Hard Candy Christmas. There’s fudge waiting to be wrapped up and given away, and everybody is gathered ‘round.

Dolly is playing.

And for a few minutes, everyone is still here.

Oh Dolly, I will always love you.

I wish you all joy, and happiness. But above all this, I wish you love.

-Willis
