We are so blessed in Puerto Morelos to have amazing diving, just minutes from shore. Our reefs are in excellent shape, thanks in great part, to the National Park protections that have been in place for over 20 years. Keep up the good work!

Flamingo Tongue snails are often used in jewelry in Caribbean locations. For years I wondered why they only used the pink and white shells and not the ones with spots. Turns out, the spots are pare of the mantel of the snail and they pull that portion in when they are touched or attached. This photo is cool because it shows that exact moment when the mantel is being retracted. Enjoy!

A theory popped into my head the other day. Hear me out... I was discussing with my son the water cycle and the salinity of the oceans. Not to get into the source of all water on earth (space), evaporation as the creation of fresh water and mineral erosion making our seas salty, this is not about all of that.
What if... the salinity of our blood, as terrestrial creatures, is the same level of salinity in the oceans at the time that our ancestral creatures crawled away from the sea?
I exploded my brain with this one, my kid's brain too! Enjoy barracuda and the mental gymnastics!

Solo divers... tell me how you handle being pair up with a buddy who you have never dove with before. Do you insist on your BWRAF pre-dive safety check? Do you quiz them on their experience level, number of logged dives and how long they have been a diver? YOU SHOULD! Take your roll as a dive buddy seriously and open good communication in the boat. Have a mini buddy briefing, after the guide has given the official briefing. It is a good habit and should not be skipped. Your life might depend on your buddy.

The spotted moray eel is one of my favorite critters. The big green eels are too much for me but the smaller spotted ones are cute and less intimidating. Have you ever seen one swimming free at the reef and not hiding in a hole? It is such a special sight!

What is your favorite part of diving? Is it the quiet meditative state you can reach, where all the terrestrial worries melt away? Is it the joy of seeing the beauty of the coral reefs? Is it the thrill of the deep and the adrenaline rush you get from breathing underwater? Tell me what got you hooked!

"I can't dive, I'm not certified."
I hear this all the time. If you are curious about scuba diving, you can try diving after a short class and safety training in the pool. Here in Puerto Morelos, conditions are ideal for beginners. Once you try diving, you will know if you love it. I bet you will!

PADIShipwreck specialty course starting on Tuesday, May 5th! Very few divers have been to this local wreck in Puerto Morelos. It is a small site and not too deep, just 60 feet/18 meters but the currents are always strong. It is mostly solid, so no pe*******on is possible at this site. We don't know the wrecks origin story. Who can tell me the name of it?

Have you ever been to the Aquarium? In Puerto Morelos, it is one of the most interesting sites. Just a 10 minute boat ride and you can drop down to 50 feet where fingers of coral host so many fish! The clouds of grunts and Pork Fish are spectacular. By far, Aquarium is one of my personal favorite dive sites.

When was your last time diving? If it has been a while, over 12-18 months, do yourself a favor and take a refresher class before getting back into the sport. A bit of theory review and safety skills brush up in the pool will do wonders for your enjoyment and confidence on your dives. Don't skip the refresher class!
